Marketing is sleazy... Or is it?
As I think about you, my friends, colleagues and the people I work with in my copywriting business, I often wonder what you secretly think about marketing and marketers.
And I’m pretty sure negative ideas come up when you think about those words. Do you think that marketers are sleazy types who don’t work for your best interests?
That would be an understandable belief! I know I’ve thought that on many occasions myself.
Can we explore if this is true?
I think it would be true to say that across most of the world, large corporations appear not to have the greater good in mind when they design and create their products and services. Right? They may believe that you need more junk food, plastic, and cosmetics, let’s face it --which probably contain compounds that aren’t going to do any good to your progesterone/estrogen balance or general health for that matter. And who promotes them? Marketers. Yes. It’s true.
You might also believe that marketers use unethical ways to make you buy things. And you could be right there, too.
But does the problem come from marketing or the way it's done?
And what if there was a different way?
Last year, Fabienne Fredrickson, the founder of a small business coaching company called Boldheart, introduced me to a new way of looking at marketing.
She sees it like this: marketing should be a public service. In fact, marketing allows you to share your brownies with the world. What does that mean? It means that it’s an avenue you can use to share your gifts with a wider audience. I love this way of thinking about marketing, and I think it puts marketers in a whole new light.
So, if you viewed your marketing activities as ways to share the good you have to provide to the world via your products and services, would you do more? Would it help you come up with new ideas or give your marketing a more personal touch?
I hope so.
When I’m working with health and wellness companies with their content and sales copy, I love to come from this place of public service and giving.
Please comment below. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this idea.
