Mainframerz Matterz

Hi everyone we are getting very close to being able to announce the date and speakers for our next event to you.

Our next event will take you on a tour of the mainframe, if you are curious about the mainframe, or work with colleagues who would like to understand what the mainframe is, if you are starting out and want to know more, or if you would like to come and share your knowledge, this time we our talking all things mainframe.

You will find out why the mainframe has been the 'go-to' choice for large businesses and how and why the mainframe handles large volumes of data so well, how mainframe software has evolved to stay a leading edge platform of choice. I'm sure some people outside of the mainframe will be surprised at just how flexible and dynamic the mainframe is.

We are very close to confirming our speakers and being able to announce the date and title of our next event, we are still aiming to hold our next event towards the end of June. As usual our event will start around 5:30 pm (UK time); which seems to be a good time given our global audience of attendees.

Bi-weekly format

Very briefly some house keeping: The newsletter will be switching to a fortnightly (bi-weekly) format, this allows me more time to ensure I can work on the newsletter and deliver great content, and also ensures I don't overload you with lots of updates.

The mainframe leads the way ?

If you work with mainframe technology you will probably know that the mainframe has introduced many of the technologies and peripherals which are common place today. I'm sure everybody who works with mainframe for any length of time can recall the day when a new peripheral or feature was added, which was so advanced and which was later adopted by personal computers. I am sure at the next event we will hear a few stories from people in our slack chat channel from people who remember when the mainframe first introduced xxxx..... and have a great story to tell.

Not only has the mainframe led the way in introducing new features, functions and hardware, but the mainframe is constantly evolving. I am sure if you were to tell any non-mainframer the previous mainframe update the Z15 (about features and functions introduced) which took place in 2019 and the newly launched Z16 (again with a raft of new features and functions) on April 5th 2022, you will here non-mainframe people quite surprised at the speed of the new developments, comparable if not quicker development of some mobile phones, and PC computer applications.

Just for Fun

Q. Do you know why the Mainframe is called a mainframe ?

It is believed that the term mainframe dates back to the 'early mainframe systems... 'housed' in enormous, room-sized metal boxes or frames'.

For those of you living in the UK, early mainframes required quite a large amount of space and power, the smaller sized mainframe required so much space that two or three family (3 bedroom) homes could have been built using the space required.

Nowadays the space required for a modern mainframe is a fraction of the size needed but the term has stuck, the mainframe today has become 'fun sized'.

Q. Do you know what someone wants when they ask if you would like to go to the 'green bar' ?

I am sure some people will have no clue what this means, others will get this straight away and some of you will say oh we called it something different.

So what is or I should say, what was a green bar, it was a type of fan-fold paper that had different designs or type of green and white horizontal bars and was used by many mainframe users to print on, as the lines helped readability.

The mainframe evolved a long long time ago and we have had to say good-bye to visits to the green bar (paper printouts), today a trip to the 'green bar' is replaced by a visit to your mobile phone / pc / laptop screen which you can access from any bar or pub if you want to.
