Introduction

In 1928, a small company started in Cleveland, Ohio. The Lubrizol Corporation set out to revolutionize the world of specialty chemicals, not knowing that nearly a century later, it would be at the forefront of sustainable innovation across multiple industries.

As the company approached its 95th anniversary in 2023, Lubrizol, although highly successful, understood the need to be even more sustainable and innovative. The world was changing, and with it, the demands on specialty chemical manufacturers. Rebecca Liebert, who had recently taken the helm as President and CEO, recognized the need for a shift in focus. "Sustainability has been in our chemistry since Lubrizol's founding," Liebert noted. "Our commitment today is stronger than ever."

 

Quick Evolution from 2021 and 2023

This commitment was evident in the company's 2021 report (1), which highlighted Lubrizol's efforts to reduce emissions, increase fuel efficiency, and extend engine life in the transportation sector. However, the 2023 Sustainability Report (issued Sept. 2024)  (2) revealed an even more comprehensive and structured approach to sustainability.

Julie Edgar, who transitioned from being Lubrizol's first Chief Sustainability Officer to Senior VP and Chief Technology Officer, played a crucial role in this evolution. "We're not just providing chemistry or products," Edgar explained. "We're enabling solutions to significant world problems — whether it's reducing emissions, delivering clean water to people who need it, or countless other examples."

The company's mission evolved to reflect this new focus on sustainability: "Lubrizol science delivers sustainable solutions to advance mobility, improve well-being and enhance modern life." This mission statement became the driving force behind all of Lubrizol's innovations, operations and (listed below) market and sales strategies.

Lubrizol’s (Perceived) Market and Sales Strategies

Lubrizol market and sales strategies align with their mission, and include:

  1. Focus on customer-centric innovation to meet evolving market demands
  2. Emphasis on sustainability as a key differentiator and value proposition
  3. Leveraging local-for-local capabilities to enhance market presence and reduce environmental impact
  4. Highlighting the sustainability benefits of products to align with customer goals

 

Sustainability Solutions Criteria

Additionally, one of the most significant changes Lubrizol made after Rebecca Liebert joined Lubrizol was to define and introduce Sustainable Solutions Criteria. Lubrizol's Sustainable Solutions Criteria, as outlined in their 2023 Sustainability Report, has this approach focusing on key areas listed below:

Key Areas of Sustainability

Circularity

  • Use of renewable (bio-based), recycled, or non-virgin materials
  • Enables enhanced durability, recyclability, biodegradability, and compostability
  • Reduces waste generation and disposal

Climate Impact Reduction

  • Reduces carbon footprint through: Improved energy efficiency in production Use of more renewable energy Lower carbon footprint materials
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles

Resource Conservation and Efficiency

  • Air: reduces emissions of CO2 and non-CO2 pollutants
  • Energy: enables efficiency of use, storage, and/or production from renewable sources
  • Water: enables efficiency of use or delivery, reduces marine contaminants
  • Land: avoids deforestation, reduces soil contaminants, promotes responsible land use, preserves biodiversity and natural organisms

Additionally, Lubrizol also uses a four-pillar approach in guiding sustainability efforts.

Four-Pillars

Four pillars help in creating sustainable solutions across their various product lines and industries, including personal care, home care, and industrial applications. The company aims to deliver positive impact without sacrificing performance, as emphasized, again, by their corporate mission to provide sustainable solutions that advance mobility, improve wellbeing, and enhance modern life.

Based on information from Lubrizol(3-5), their Sustainable Solutions criteria are built around the following four key pillars:

  1. Naturality or biodegradability This includes using natural or derived natural ingredients (ISO 16128-1) Designing products for biodegradability
  2. Low carbon footprint Focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions Minimizing overall carbon footprint of products and processes
  3. Eco-designed manufacturing process Developing processes that are safe and have low environmental impact Addressing the 12 principles of Green Chemistry
  4. Sustainable supply chain Ensuring traceability and transparency Preserving biodiversity Respecting human rights

Specific examples of products that meet these criteria include:

·       Carbopol® Fusion S-20 polymer: An inherently biodegradable polymer with a low carbon footprint, containing starch as a renewable resource.

·       Uplevity™ e-Lift peptide: An ingredient made from amino acids found in nature, with production addressing Green Chemistry principles.

The criteria demonstrate Lubrizol's commitment to integrating sustainable practices throughout their value chain, from raw material sourcing to product development and manufacturing.

 Innovative, Sustainable Products

Elizabeth Grove, who took over as Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the importance of these approaches: "The world needs Lubrizol to provide the diverse range of technologies essential for a more sustainable future for everyone. Empowering our clients to offer cleaner, more efficient, and innovative solutions to global sustainability challenges is our forte."

And, as Abhishek Shrivastava, Vice President, Innovation Decision Science, Technology recently stated, “Innovation is not a ‘eureka’ moment. It’s a structured process that requires and venture capital mindset. To progress we must think big, start small, assess data efficiently, and scale quickly.”

This commitment to sustainability, with an emphasis on innovation, led to several groundbreaking products. The Carbopol® Fusion S-20 Polymer, for instance, demonstrated a 30% reduction in environmental impact compared to traditional benchmarks. The company also made strides in electric vehicle technology with its Evogen™ Electric Vehicle Fluids, designed to improve EV efficiency and longevity.

Some innovative products are listed in Table 2 (and Picture 1) which highlights Lubrizol's focus on developing sustainable solutions across various industries, from personal care and transportation to pharmaceuticals and industrial applications. Each product addresses specific sustainability challenges while maintaining or improving performance.

Future Areas for Sustainability

Looking to the future, Lubrizol is poised to make even greater strides in sustainable innovations. Based on past and current market innovations, the company is likely to focus on:

  1. Advanced materials for renewable energy: Developing more efficient and durable materials for solar panels and wind turbines.
  2. Circular economy solutions: Creating products that are not only recyclable but also made from recycled or bio-based materials.
  3. Water conservation and purification technologies: Expanding on their success with TempRite® CPVC to develop more solutions for clean water delivery and conservation.
