Korea Institute of Biotechnology and Biotechnology Announces 'Top 10 Life Science Technologies of 2025'

On January 21, the Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Yoo Sang-im) and the Korea Institute of Biotechnology and Biotechnology (President Kim Jang-sung) unveiled the 'Top 10 Life Science (Bio) Future Promising Technologies of 2025' that will lead the future of cutting-edge life sciences.

Future promising technologies in life sciences (bio) refer to technologies that can be realized technologically or industrially within the next 5~10 years based on life science research, and are expected to have a high technological and industrial ripple effect not only in the field of advanced life sciences (bio) but also in various fields.

According to the results of the 2025 Life Science (Bio) Future Promising Technology Discovery, the life science research system is expected to change from repetitive experiments and observation-based research to data-based prediction and inference by converging with artificial intelligence technology. Beyond the field of  'Observing and Reading' life phenomena as they are, the vast amount of data generated in each field of 'Edit', 'Copying/Synthesizing' useful functions, and 'Predicting,  Simulating, and Imagine' life phenomena in a virtual space is expected to be organically connected through artificial intelligence technology, innovatively shortening and accelerating the cycle of discovery and development.

Human immune system technology and animated biological robots are expected to have a high technological ripple effect that is used for technological advancement in various fields, and early diagnosis of multiple cancers, anti-aging antibody therapeutics, and life science (bio) foundation models are expected to meet high industrial demand. In particular, it has been analyzed that gene editors designed by artificial intelligence will have a high technological and industrial impact.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Institute of Biotechnology and Biotechnology have been discovering promising technologies in the field of advanced life sciences (advanced bio), one of the three game-changing technologies, since 2015. Unlike major domestic and foreign institutions announcing promising technologies for the future in all fields of science and technology, a life science (bio) specialized discovery procedure is established to select and announce technologies. In the selection process, not only industry, academia, research, and disease experts, but also the general public who are interested in life sciences can participate through the life science (bio) policy information portal site BioIn (www.bioin.or.kr).
