Life is like a game of Chutes & Ladders

Life is like a game of Chutes & Ladders

Also known as Snakes and Ladders in some regions, Chutes and Ladders is a classic board game. To win, here are 5 tips that might help:

  1. Be patient.  Chutes and Ladders is a game of perseverance. Even if you fall behind, a fortunate dice roll can quickly bring you back into the game.  It is the same with life.  Saying, “I am…” rather than “I’m not….”  Or “I want…” rather than “I don’t want…” will keep you in the game. My friend Arnie has a father and a grandfather who both had strokes and died young.  As long as I can remember, Arnie proclaimed he was not going to get a stroke.  He said it over and over.  And guess what, Arnie had a stroke.
  2. Watch Out for Chutes (Snakes.)  Be cautious when nearing chutes, as landing on one will move you backward. Try to navigate away from these if possible.  In life, when you hear yourself thinking, “This will never work.  This is hard,” catch yourself before you say it out loud because words have power.  Huge power.According to the Bible, words played a fundamental role in the creation of the universe. It says, “In the beginning was the word."  Words manifest.  In the same way Arnie’s words became his reality. Whether you intend it or not, at this moment your words are creating your future universe.
  3. You have to understand the rules.  In the game of life, winners know what they want.  Get clear about your intentions.  Henry Ford said, “If you think you can, or you think you can’t…you are right.”
  4. Move Strategically.  Plan your moves based on the current board situation. In life, be here now. "The past is a story, the future a mystery; the present is where your power resides. Be here now, and script a present worth remembering." – Author unknown.
  5. Aim for Ladders.  It will move you forward. Try to position yourself near ladders to increase your chances of progressing quickly. In life, to get ahead, try to position yourself near uplifting people and situations.  Stay away from people and situations that pull you down.

You found a great metaphor in Chutes and Ladders. Understanding the rules and being clear about your goals are fundamental to success; both in life and board games. Thanks for sharing Shar McBee

Thank you for sharing these insightful tips, Shar, and for taking me down memory lane! I like the analogy you drew between the game of Chutes and Ladders and life. You're absolutely right that patience, mindfulness, understanding the rules, making strategic moves, and maintaining a positive outlook are all essential traits for achieving success in both.
