Legal Tech Special Edition: Cloud, data and AI at ILTACON 2024

Hello 👋

Caspar here with a special newsletter edition to reflect on the whirlwind of ILTACON 2024, and share our top takeaways and favourite photos.

ILTACON 2024 officially wrapped up a month ago but we’re still on a high from the massive event. More than 4,000 legal industry professionals descended on Nashville from August 11-15 for the annual conference, hosted by the International Legal Technology Association, making it the biggest one yet.

After officially launching Draftable Legal at ILTACON 2023 in Orlando, this year Draftable returned as a proud sponsor of ILTACON 2024, with over 500 law firms worldwide now using Draftable Legal, including UK Top 50 firm Brodies, NLJ Top 200 firm Jones Walker in the US, and Allens, one of the largest firms in the Asia-Pacific.

The reception to Draftable Legal was incredible, and we were thrilled to meet and speak with some of the brightest minds in legal tech from all over the world.

We can’t wait to catch up with the legal tech community again soon.

Move to cloud, structure data, adopt AI: Key takeaways from ILTACON 2024

The major themes of ILTACON 2024 were generative AI, cloud transformation and data management, and they all tied together in a fascinating way. I've put together a quick summary of my key takeaways below, and you can read the full article here.

“While law firms have historically stuck to on-premises tools and platforms, the evolution of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) is now acting as a powerful catalyst, or “carrot”, driving firms to not only transition to the cloud but also get on top of their data, to effectively leverage new AI-powered tools.”

6 key takeaways from ILTACON 2024

  1. Start using AI technology: Law firms looking to explore AI tools should start by using enterprise-grade solutions like Microsoft CoPilot and new AI-powered integrations in their existing tech solutions.
  2. Transition to the cloud: Generative AI is providing law firms with both the incentive and tools to undertake significant technological transformations and access advanced AI platforms. The future of legal technology will be cloud-based with an ecosystem of software and integrations that all seamlessly interact with each other.
  3. Support device flexibility: Leveraging cloud platforms also provides flexibility for attorneys to securely work from anywhere, on any device.
  4. Improve data management: Law firms need to prioritise the identification and organisation of their unstructured data to mitigate unstructured data security risks. Implementing these policies is challenging, and teams will need to secure the support of partners and senior leadership to ensure the success of these initiatives.
  5. Leverage data for custom AI models: Structuring data has the added benefit of having a quality set of data to train custom AI models for a firm, tailored to their specific needs and use cases.
  6. Collaborate with tech vendors: Firms should also look to engage with legal tech vendors to shape the development of AI tools, participate in pilot programs, and provide feedback to ensure that AI solutions are practical and meet specific firm needs.
