Yet, for the seasoned PLM professional, this enthusiasm is often met with a healthy dose of pragmatism and legitimate questions:

"Haven't our existing PLM systems, built over decades, already attempted to model complex product structures and relationships?"

"How is this 'Knowledge Graph' approach fundamentally different, and if there are genuine reasons to consider layering it on top of, or alongside, our legacy infrastructure, why is now the opportune moment?"

These are not trivial questions. They reflect a deep understanding of PLM's inherent complexities and a cautiousness born from past experiences with technological shifts. Adding another layer to this caution is the current hype surrounding Artificial Intelligence.

Here in 2025, we see a surge of interest in AI agents, sophisticated inter-process communication protocols, and "intelligent middleware" fostering a perception that AI is some sort of magic wand capable of solving any problem. But within this fog, there exist reasons for cautious optimism – in particular, I believe that the judicious use of Large Language Models may offer PLM practitioners tangible answers to the question, “why knowledge graphs and why now?” that extend beyond mere hype.

While the broader discourse often paints AI as a solution for complex decision-making itself – a topic this series approaches with a call for verifiable grounding – one of its most pragmatic and immediate contributions can be augmentation, specifically to assist in significantly lowering the barrier to developing and maintaining the Knowledge Graphs that provide this very grounding

Modern LLMs, for example, are demonstrating considerable utility in accelerating the initial phases of KG construction: they can assist domain experts in extracting potential entities and relationships from vast corpuses of existing documents, help brainstorm initial ontological structures, and even facilitate the articulation of business rules by translating natural language descriptions into more formal suggestions.

This AI-assisted approach can make the prospect of KG development feel less like a purely esoteric, academic exercise and more like a dynamic, collaborative practice where domain experts, supported by intelligent tools, can more rapidly externalize and structure their critical knowledge. 

However, it is crucial to emphasize that this is an augmentation, not an automation, of expertise. The outputs of LLM assistance require rigorous validation, refinement, and governance by human domain specialists to ensure semantic accuracy, logical consistency, and fitness for purpose, especially when building the foundations for Robust Reasoning. Thus, AI doesn't remove the need for expert-driven knowledge modeling, but it can make the initial steps more accessible and the overall process more inclusive and efficient.

The "why now?" is thus twofold: partly the maturity of KG technology itself, making targeted semantic integrations more feasible, and partly the emergence of AI tools like LLMs that can democratize KG development, helping to build the verifiable knowledge foundations needed if we are to harness the broader potential of AI responsibly. Notwithstanding the opportunities to exploit SoTA and augment teams, the fear of embarking on a massive, ill-defined "knowledge modeling" exercise remains a significant barrier to adoption. It evokes images of lengthy academic debates over ontologies while urgent business problems remain unsolved. To navigate this, we need a pragmatic lens, a way to ground the sophisticated capabilities of KGs in the concrete, everyday challenges faced by PLM practitioners.

For this article, let us turn to the insights of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, particularly his later work emphasizing that the meaning of language is found in its use ("meaning as use") and that language functions within specific contexts or "language-games."

The PDM system holds the design specification listing the material. The MES database may contain current machine parameters. The SDM system archives material cards for FEA. Quality databases store inspection protocols and defect libraries. ERP systems track suppliers and costs.

Understanding the holistic "use" – the full spectrum of downstream consequences – of substituting Material A with Material B thus becomes a painstaking and error-prone manual "game." Benedict Smith again a long article to read, you keep me busy. I fully agree with the technical points your are making, the importance of a KG and the usage of LLM.| Still, when reading the use cases, I observe linear, serial process steps between disciplines. I am promoting that in a data-driven environment (with KGs), people can work on a product in a multidisciplinary mode in real time instead of linear approval steps. Technology brings the highest benefits if it also supports new ways of working. Often I explain that if you do not change the way of working but improve the tools, you can reach single-digit benefits (which can still be big), however, doing things differently in real-time, where you become proactive instead of reactive, can lead to big, double-digit benefits. But organisational change is difficult ....
