Knowledge can be gained ... skills can be developed …but are we empathetic and considerate that makes us humane ?... what teaches us that?
Inclusion of Social–emotional learning (SEL) in curriculum can take students more than half way through it. SEL will help students to tackle everyday challenges and will be beneficial academically, professionally, and socially. It provides a basis for positive and strong self-esteem, from problem-solving to self-discipline, effective emotional management and more.
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is the most authoritative source of knowledge on SEL.The key components of CASEL are Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These main components were developed to provide educational systems with clear objectives and a framework for implementing them. Many research shows a that there is a connect between the skills taught in SEL programs and academic achievement, positive nature and behaviour, and healthier life choices in future.
By having this included in the curriculum, schools can appoint eligible mentors who can teach children this right from the beginning of their teenage. This SEL will educate children what many parents fail to do .As the teenage phase is very sensitive and crucial ,through social-emotional learning young minds will be self-aware of themselves, can handle problems and criticisms more maturely. They will also learn how to regulate their emotions in a right way so that they do not compress it within themselves at the same time be empathetic in all sorts of relationship. This will improve their self-confidence and will help them grow into confident adults. It aids in the development of stronger bonds. That's because being aware of our emotions can help us communicate more clearly about our feelings, avoid or settle disputes more effectively, and move through painful emotions more quickly.
Why being emotionally aware and empathetic is important ?
It is not something that is to be learnt from book and to be implemented. It is a lifestyle that has to be incorporated and cultivated eventually. So, when this learning is exposed to children at early stage the benefits are more and they can manage teenage depression which is very common these days predominantly due to social media illusions. As time goes , managing emotions and being empathetic is very important in adult life as well as in one’s career. An employer only when empathetic can understand his/her employees feelings guide them accordingly so that they can be effective , positive and productive. As an employee this quality will improve relationships among colleagues , better team work can be achieved. The children with this SEL , as adults can manage their personal problems in a better way and be optimistic throughout.
It would be plausible if many schools start including this as a mandatory learning for better character development of the children.
