🚀 Key Changes in the 2020 Scrum Guide Compared to 2017 📖

Scrum has evolved to be less prescriptive, more flexible, and more focused on value delivery. The 2020 Scrum Guide introduced several key updates that enhance transparency, team accountability, and adaptability.

Here are some of the major changes:

🔹 Scrum Team Structure – The term "Development Team" has been removed. Now, the Scrum Team consists of Developers, a Scrum Master, and a Product Owner, eliminating hierarchy and promoting shared accountability.

🔹 Commitments for Transparency – Each artifact now has a clear commitment: • Product Goal for the Product Backlog • Sprint Goal for the Sprint Backlog • Definition of Done for the Increment

🔹 From Self-Organizing to Self-Managing – Teams are no longer just self-organizing; they are now self-managing, meaning they decide who, how, and what to work on.

🔹 Sprint Planning Enhancement – A new question has been added: "Why is this Sprint valuable?" alongside "What can be done in this Sprint?" and "How will the work be done?" This aligns Sprint execution with long-term objectives.

🔹 Daily Scrum Flexibility – The three standard questions are now optional. Teams can choose any structure as long as it keeps focus on the Sprint Goal.

🔹 Less Prescriptive Language – The guide has been simplified to make Scrum more adaptable across industries, reducing strict rules around team roles and structures.

🔹 Scrum Master as a True Leader – The Scrum Master is now described as a true leader who serves not just the Scrum Team but also the entire organization, fostering agility at scale.

🔹 Team Size Flexibility – Previously, a Development Team consisted of 3-9 members (excluding the Scrum Master and Product Owner). Now, the entire Scrum Team should be 10 or fewer people, offering better flexibility.

What These Changes Mean for You

✅ More focus on long-term outcomes with Product Goal ✅ Greater team autonomy with self-management ✅ Scrum Master’s role expanded beyond facilitation to true leadership ✅ A less prescriptive, more adaptable Scrum framework

The 2020 updates make Scrum more lightweight, practical, and widely applicable across industries.
