The Journey to Operational Resilience

When embarking on a world tour that spans over 16 countries, it's essential to pause and reflect on the journey ahead. Last week, the SolarWinds team and I kicked off our tour in Bogotá, Colombia. It was a pleasure to engage with partners, peers, and stakeholders in person, sharing the ambitious plans SolarWinds has for the future.

One of the main themes discussed was operational resilience and how today’s organizations can achieve it. In other words, how can organizations successfully navigate their journey to operational resilience?

At SolarWinds, I define operational resilience as the ability to adapt and thrive amidst evolving challenges and disruptions. With the myriad challenges facing today's organizations, IT teams must build an agile and intuitive ecosystem of resilience. This means moving beyond a reactive stance and adopting technology and best practices that foster a proactive, automated, and integrated approach throughout the organization.

Today’s IT Issues Can be Frustrating

Let’s start by acknowledging that being an IT leader hasn’t gotten easier over the years. Although no two IT teams face the exact same challenges, I think there are some common themes many organizations can relate to. For example, the customers I speak with every day express how their IT environments are getting more complex, and they are facing siloed datasets, delayed issue resolution, and tool sprawl.

Then there’s cybersecurity. Threat actors are operating at a whole new speed and scale, at times unintentionally aided by the very people you work with. Uninformed colleagues may click on the wrong link or open the wrong email which exposes their company to vulnerabilities. And, we haven’t even touched on the challenges of artificial intelligence (AI), which, despite its ability to supercharge innovation, can create its own set of challenges if it’s left unchecked.

Today’s companies depend on an unprecedented amount of evolving technology, creating massive, interdependent environments that have become harder to comprehend and manage. It’s imperative that we work toward resolutions for these challenges fast as an industry.

Understanding Operational Resilience

So, how do you combat these issues? How do you build a framework that acts as the foundation for operational resilience? It helps to adjust how you think about your IT systems. This means:

  • Viewing your IT environment as one organism — Although it can feel like it at times, your IT environment isn’t a group of separate tools that don’t matter to each other. When you view your IT environment as an interconnected body, it becomes easier to see relationships within your infrastructure and find issues when there’s an incident.
  • Don’t forget your people — AI isn’t the only technology that can cause issues if left unchecked. Each solution or service should always include people and processes that can understand how each tool works. This way, someone will always keep your technology accountable and can provide expertise if there’s a problem.
  • Training is key — To ensure this expertise, continue to invest in training and other learning opportunities for everyone in your organization. As a result, the entire workforce can understand good IT practices — like why they shouldn’t click on an email that looks legitimate but could be harmful.

Not only should you have the mindset for operational resilience, you must re-think how your solutions can help you achieve truly hybrid IT.

Expanding on Observability

Over the past year, we've dedicated significant effort to understanding how we can better support our customers on their journey to operational resilience. Our conclusion? It's time to expand our approach to observability.

Consider this: your brain is the most advanced observability system in existence. That's why the human body is one of the most resilient systems. The brain subconsciously recognizes issues and signals the body to respond consciously.

However, many observability solutions only operate in the "subconscious." They alert but require additional solutions that increase costs and complexity. Introducing incident response integrates “consciousness” and reduces customer complexity, improves productivity, and, most importantly, ensures rapid response.

Speaking to this approach was a highlight in Bogota, and I loved sharing my perspective on the announcements we made last week. Each solution and enhancement will enable organizations to implement hybrid IT that functions more like a brain and delivers unmatched operational resilience, providing quick, targeted solutions that promote lasting business impact.

As we continue our journey across the globe, the insights and feedback we gather will be invaluable in shaping the future of operational resilience. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, SolarWinds is committed to empowering organizations to navigate the complexities of modern IT environments with confidence. Together, we can build a resilient future where technology not only supports but drives business success. Thank you for joining us on this exciting journey.
