Description of duties: Type I Wildlife Management Area Responsibilities: Includes direct involvement in the implementation of management programs for the Chassahowitzka WMA and Perry Oldenburg, Janet Butterfield Brooks, and Chinsegut WEAs. Collection of biological data to evaluate wildlife population numbers / fluctuations and land response to habitat management and user pressures. Accomplish Commission-planned activities such as controlled burning, roller chopping, resource inventories, road repairs, fence maintenance, public hunt management, etc. Provide wildlife related recreational opportunities including consumptive and non-consumptive uses where appropriate. Identification and protection of endangered species and habitats. Documentation, recommendation and administration of eradication programs for exotic plant and animal species to ensure the integrity of local ecosystems.
Knowledge Skills Abilities: Wildlife ecology, ecosystem management, ability to write technical reports, wildlife and habitat survey and inventory knowledge. Strong GIS skills. Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with cooperators, coworkers, and constituents. The ability to operate outdoors under inclement weather conditions, the ability to work productively unsupervised alone or as member of a team.

OPS Fish and Wildlife Technician FWRI Freshwater Fisheries Research/Resource Assessment
Job Description: This posting is for an OPS Fish and Wildlife Technician position with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) out of the Freshwater Fisheries Research Field Office in Gainesville, FL. The applicant will be participating in a state-wide, freshwater mussel monitoring program in Florida. Position is a one year appointment with potential for extension based on continued appropriations. Successful applicant will be eligible for state of Florida health benefits. Primary duties will include participating in extensive field collections of freshwater mussels using a variety of methods and gears, maintenance of sampling equipment; species level identification of freshwater mussels and other invertebrates; and office work including data entry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Willingness and ability to work long hours in potentially inclement conditions including heat/cold, rain, dirt, hazardous wildlife, and darkness. Willingness and ability to participate in multi-day sampling trips (4+ nights) often in successional work weeks. Applicant must be able to swim and snorkel. Applicant must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. The ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs for short distances. Use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Ability to operate and trailer small boats.
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver's license.
Preferred Criteria: A bachelor's degree in the physical or biological sciences. SCUBA Certification from a recognized organization; AAUS or other scientific diving certification. Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative freshwater mussel sampling methods. Ability to identify freshwater invertebrates (specifically mussels) to the species level.
