Investing in Sustainable Infrastructure

In the picturesque Thimmanatti village of Madakkal Panchayat, Krishnagiri District, Tamil Nadu, a transformative infrastructure project is bridging the gap between community needs and climate resilience. As part of the Climate Proofing of Agriculture and Livelihood initiative, supported by Schaeffler India Limited, BAIF has implemented the innovative Bridge-Cum-Culvert structure—an intervention that addresses both accessibility and water management challenges.

The Need for Change

Madakkal Panchayat spans a watershed area of 13.34 km², with multiple streams coursing through its terrain. In recent years, growing reliance on groundwater for agriculture and domestic needs has necessitated interventions to save surface runoff and recharge aquifers. While check dams, gabions, and gully plugs have been effective in some areas, regions with significant human activity require solutions that integrate accessibility and water conservation.

Thimmanatti village exemplified this challenge. During monsoon rains, roads connecting key areas became impassable due to flooding, isolating communities and hindering daily activities. The necessity for a multi-functional solution was evident.

Bridge-Cum-Culvert: A Game-Changing Innovation

Designed by BAIF's technical experts, the Bridge-Cum-Culvert offers a dual-purpose solution. Combining the features of a bridge and a culvert, it enables water to flow beneath the structure while storing substantial runoff. The upper section supports vehicular and pedestrian traffic, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity even during heavy rains.

Construction began in September 2024 and concluded by December 2024. With a storage capacity of 12,000 cubic metres, the structure benefits approximately 150 households across five villages, bolstering their resilience to extreme weather events.

Community Impact

For the residents of Thimmanatti, this intervention is more than infrastructure—it is a lifeline. It ensures year-round accessibility while safeguarding vital water resources, addressing immediate needs and contributing to long-term sustainability.

This project exemplifies the power of innovative, context-sensitive solutions in rural development. It underscores the importance of partnerships between communities, technical experts, and corporate supporters in building a resilient future.

Let us continue to invest in sustainable infrastructure that empowers communities and protects our shared resources.

It's need of time to critically evaluate the need and provide an alternative for long term solution, sustainable, that would not only fulfill today's need of smooth transportation but also help in water conservation.
