Introducing the Hyperscale WAN - Google AI powered next gen WAN

Google Cloud WAN would redefine Enterprise Networking, entering as a WAN service provider

Google at Google Cloud Next 25 event, announced the launch of Google's AI-powered next-generation global network - a Cloud WAN, a fully managed enterprise backbone that leverages Google's vast global network infrastructure.

Google has built this rock-solid network over the last 25 years, to quote "we’ve been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of network technology, building a global infrastructure that powers Google and Google Cloud for billions of users and enterprise customers globally" Blog post here.

Its a masterstroke that will give Google an enormous edge in the AI and Cloud market while giving control over its customer experience and ensuring QoS while using Google cloud services. The other AI / Cloud providers would have to play catch up to this one and the network infrastructure Google has built over these years isn't easy to replicate easily.

This move is set to significantly impact the SD-WAN service provider market by offering a unified, reliable, and secure solution for wide area networks along with an AI / Cloud and security solution. It also gives an amazing edge to Google Cloud product as an entry point into Enterprise markets.

What is this AI Powered next gen Global Cloud WAN?

"Cloud WAN is a fully managed, reliable, and secure enterprise backbone to transform enterprise-wide area network (WAN) architectures."

Implementation and Benefits of this WAN

  • Multi-Shard Isolation: Each shard operates independently, enhancing resiliency and minimizing failure impact.
  • AI Integration: The network supports AI applications with high performance and reliability, making it suitable for cloud customers needing robust infrastructure for AI/ML deployments1.
  • Cloud WAN: Recently launched, Cloud WAN allows enterprises to utilize Google's global network for their WAN needs, offering improved performance and cost savings compared to traditional solutions

Impact on SD-WAN Service Providers

The introduction of Cloud WAN positions Google as a major player in the MPLS / SD-WAN / Cloud connect market, potentially disrupting traditional service providers:

  1. Hyperscale Infrastructure: Google's network provides unparalleled reliability and performance, making it an attractive alternative for enterprises seeking robust connectivity. It would be very difficult for anyone else to match this reliability levels, scale or reach.
  2. Partnerships & Integration: Google's collaboration with telcos globally whilst delivering search and youtube traffic gives them enormous reach and opportunities to telcos who align themselves with Google.
  3. Market Competition: Traditional SD-WAN providers may need to rethink their strategies and partnerships to match this scale. Perhaps adapt by offering more competitive pricing and innovative features to remain relevant in a market where hyperscale cloud providers are increasingly influential or partner with Google to become a reseller partner.

The Future of SD-WAN

As the market evolves, we can expect to see more partnerships and innovations that blend the strengths of hyperscale networks with the flexibility of SD-WAN solutions. This convergence will drive better performance, security, and cost efficiency for enterprises.

The SD-WAN market, valued at USD 6.9 billion in 2024, is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.94%, reaching USD 66.2 billion by 2031 (source).
