Intro to SAP HANA architectures: a RaISEd 2023 view

SAP’s flagship database, HANA, is not new. It was introduced back in 2011.

2023 might be a little too late for an introduction, one may think.

However, today’s mature HANA is quite different from the very first release, as many functionalities have been added and expanded.

This, along with the majority of customers having a cloud strategy, and classic software and hardware companies aiming to become cloud service providers, has changed the landscape significantly, especially on what HANA brings to the table and how it can be implemented and consumed.

So let me introduce you to 2023 HANA architectures.

What is SAP HANA – in 2023?

The essence of HANA has not changed though. Very (very) simply put, HANA is an in-memory database by SAP. It can be used by many of their software products, but also by 3rd party or even custom applications.

When used by SAP’s own ERP, HANA offers the capability of consolidating OLTP and OLAP in one single set of data, without the need of complex ETL or duplicated infrastructure to run operational datamarts. The same database can be used for both transactions and reporting.

Furthermore, most of the calculations can happen in the same server as the HANA DB runs, instead of separated application server as would be the case with "classic", non-HANA ERP. This increases the efficiency and the performance of the overall solution.

In the latest versions, new functionalities have been added, for example native data tiering capabilities (NSE, extension nodes), multi-target data replication or active-active read only configuration, just to mention a few.

Where to run SAP HANA - in 2023?

HANA is all about certified infrastructure that has been heavily tested and validated. SAP has always been strict in this sense for a good reason: to minimize customer issues. This strictness has not changed, nevertheless over time SAP has been increasing their certified options from just fixed appliances all the way up to cloud IaaS deployments and almost everything in between.

Current on premise options include appliances, tailored solutions (TDI) and hyperconverged (HCI).

Originally, HANA was only certified on so called "appliances”, which are all-inclusive solutions that comprise all the components required to run the database: servers, storage, operating system, sometimes even networking. This option is still available and it’s probably the safest and easiest for customers: the solution is pre-integrated and certified as a whole and as a result performance is predictable and guaranteed by the certification. The downside is that these are set configurations and flexibility is limited.

Next SAP introduced the tailored option or TDI (Tailored Datacenter Integration). With this option, only the individual components (servers, storage, OS) are certified; customers make their choice from what’s certified and the resulting overall solution typically needs to be built, integrated and validated onsite by someone with the right credentials. This tailored option provides more flexibility and the capability to mix vendors and virtualize, however, it’s generally more complex and less predictable for the customer.

A variant of the appliance certification are the HANA HCI solutions, which are certified all the way up to the hypervisor including the Software Defined Solution.

There are also variants of the tailored options, including IBM Power servers and the use of Intel Optane Persistent Memory.

HANA can also run on most public cloud providers like Azure, AWS, GCP and Alibaba. The IaaS certification is specific for cloud service providers and different from the appliance or tailored certifications.

How to consume HANA – in 2023?

Customers can get their perpetual HANA license from SAP and the hardware from their preferred hardware vendor(s); or they can opt for an all-inclusive subscription based model: enter RISE!

RISE with SAP

In brief, RISE is a subscription based offering by SAP that encompasses products, tools and services to take customers from wherever they are in their ERP journey, to become an intelligent enterprise.

Target customers can be SAP non-HANA ECC customers, customers running S/4HANA on premises, or even new customers to SAP. By choosing RISE, these customers will run SAP’s ERP Cloud powered by HANA and take advantage other benefits like BTP (Business Technology Platform) to custom their solution, Business Networks and multiple outcome-driven services and tools.

Customers have the power to choose where and how they want to run the ERP cloud: either in fully shared SaaS model (Public Edition), or dedicated tenant on hyperscaler provided infrastructure (Private Edition on hyperscaler) or dedicated tenant on dedicated infrastructure (Private Edition on customer datacenter or co-location).

The public edition can be a good fit for brand new or greenfield customers, or customers that are not too large or don’t have specific needs and can fulfill their requirements with a standard product subject to fixed refresh cycles and innovations. Most customers though, may need to implement some degree of tailoring, therefore the private editions may be better fit for them. And customers with concerns about data sovereignty, data control, with latency sensitive applications or complex environments with high level of interdependency, may be the best fit for the private edition, customer data center option, which provides the highest level of control and customization.

Besides the cloud ERP product, RISE offers additional services and tools to customers to facilitate their business transformation to become an intelligent enterprise.

HPE Solutions for SAP

In 2011, I could remember by heart all the sizes and solutions that HPE had for SAP HANA. This is not the case anymore in 2023 :-)

HPE has over 30 years of partnership with SAP and has always been aligned with SAP to offer infrastructure for every deployment option – and this started well before HANA inception.

Currently, HPE offers a full spectrum of flexible solutions to run HANA the way customers should choose, within or outside RISE, in addition to multiple consumption and value added options:

  • HANA certified appliances from 192GB all the way up to 24TB RAM single instance.
  • Servers and storage certified and supported for HANA tailored solutions, including HPE Alletra with 100% guaranteed availability which is key for SAP HANA workloads running your business.
  • HANA HCI solutions based on VMWare vSAN, Nutanix AHV/VMWare and HPE Simplivity.
  • Hosted HANA solutions through multiple partners and System Integrators.
  • SAP RISE Private Edition Customer Datacenter infrastructure, with the option to leverage agreements with market leader co-location providers (Equinix, CyrusOne, Digital Realty) for a truly “as a Service” hands off experience, and avoiding to move data to the public cloud.
  • Plus, value added software like HPE Serviceguard or Zerto to protect the service and restore it quickly in the event of planned or unplanned downtime, including disasters and ransomware attacks.
  • Plus, options to get the hardware through traditional purchase or pay per use with HPE Greenlake, billed based on used capacity with the peace of mind of predictable cost throughout the term.
  • Plus, all coming from the market leader in SAP architecture.

Tell HPE how you want to run SAP and we will surely have an option for you!
