Every year, on December 3rd, we commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities all over the world. It's a day dedicated to acknowledging the struggles, achievements, and contributions of individuals with disabilities worldwide. Since 1992, this day has served as a platform to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions, and advocate for the rights and well-being of people with disabilities.

Helambu Municipality Joins the World

For the first time ever Helambu’s Rural Municipality held Disability Day honoring its citizens with disabilities, especially children with disabilities and their parents. The event was held in the village of Chanaute.

Adults with disabilities, children with disabilities, their parents, government officials, guests from Kathmandu and abroad gathered in celebration.

Music was played, food was served and films about persons with disabilities were shown. But the most impressive of all was the warm atmosphere where parents and persons with disabilities told their stories. Many came to tears and there were many standing ovations recognizing the work and struggles of parents.

One of the main topics highlighted was that children with disabilities should never be separated from their families. Disrupting stories were told about children who had gone to hostels to get education only to be misused. The Mayor of Helambu, Mr. Nima Gyaljen Hyolmo recently made a statement that no child under the age ten should be sent away from their parents

.

Helambu, a Municipality - taking Disabilities Seriously

The Mayor should be praised for the steps recently taken in his area regarding the development of disability services. Up until recently there was no data and few services for persons with disabilities. Now for example, it is known how many people are living with disabilities in the area. Each and every child and family have been visited, given advice regarding their child and services needed.

Five parent groups have been established across the municipality to create platforms where they can support each other and make their needs known to the municipality so relevant services are developed.

Likewise, a municipality Disability Help Desk has been established where persons can seek help and information.

There are still many things to be done for example adjusting schools so they can accommodate children with disabilities -this will take time but the municipality’s commitment is clear – they are determined to give a better life to all their children. The event was also supported by civil society originations - RCRD and JNF, both with partners in Denmark - CICED and ATOS, which are both funded by CISU.
