Insights with Cherith: The Power of Networking

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Insights with Cherith, where we explore topics related to education, entrepreneurship, and personal growth. In today's edition, we're discussing the power of networking and how building strong relationships can lead to career success.

As a millennial woman navigating the professional world, I've learned firsthand the importance of networking. It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that hard work and talent are enough to advance in your career, but the truth is that relationships are just as important. In fact, according to a LinkedIn survey, 85% of jobs are filled through networking.

Networking can feel intimidating, especially if you're shy or introverted. But building strong relationships is essential to career growth, and it's a skill that can be developed over time. Here are some tips and strategies to help you build and maintain a strong network:

  1. Start with the people you know. Networking doesn't have to mean attending big events or reaching out to strangers on LinkedIn. Start by connecting with people you already know, such as former colleagues, classmates, or friends. Let them know what you're up to and ask about their own careers. You never know where a conversation might lead.
  2. Attend events in your industry. Industry events are a great way to meet new people and learn about trends and opportunities in your field. Look for events that interest you, and don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with someone new.
  3. Build relationships, not just contacts. Networking is about more than just collecting business cards. Take the time to get to know the people you meet and build genuine relationships. Follow up with an email or a coffee date to continue the conversation and learn more about each other's careers.
  4. Give as well as receive. Networking is a two-way street, and it's important to give as well as receive. Offer to help others in your network by sharing your own expertise or introducing them to someone who might be able to help them.
  5. Maintain your relationships. Networking isn't a one-time event – it's an ongoing process. Make an effort to stay in touch with the people in your network, whether it's through regular check-ins, social media, or meeting up for coffee.

Remember, networking is about building relationships, not just adding contacts to your list. It's about giving as well as receiving and making genuine connections with people in your industry. And it's a skill that can be developed over time with practice and persistence.

As I continue to navigate my own career, I'm still learning about the power of networking and how it can help me achieve my goals. But I'm excited to keep building relationships and see where they might take me. I encourage you to do the same – you never know who you might meet and what opportunities might arise.
