Inclusive Leadership while navigating a world of Diverse Perspectives

"Truth was a mirror that broke, everyone took a piece and thought they had the truth"..

In my journey towards inclusive leadership, I’ve encountered situations where stakeholders, acting in good faith, held differing yet valid perspectives on the same issue. Each of their truths was shaped by their unique experiences, and all were reasonable within their context. These experiences have taught me that the more I discover, the more I am humbled by how much I don’t know.

Leaders often find themselves piecing together fragmented truths, the challenge is particularly pronounced in the pursuit of inclusive leadership, where understanding and integrating diverse viewpoints is crucial for effective decision-making.

To navigate this fragmented landscape, here are three strategies that inclusive leaders use to foster inclusivity:

1. Genuine Curiosity and Embracing Diverse Perspectives

As humans we naturally gravitate towards those who think and behave like us, but this bias can hinder the discovery of new ideas and insights. Inclusive leaders actively seek out and integrate diverse perspectives, especially when decisions carry significant consequences. They engage with individuals from different backgrounds and differing opinions to broaden their understanding and open up new ways of thinking. This not only enhances decision-making but also helps them creates an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute.

2. Synthesizing Information with Detachment

Gathering diverse perspectives is only the first step. Leaders must then synthesize this information into a coherent strategy. This involves connecting the dots between various viewpoints and identifying patterns that form a broader narrative. However, it’s crucial to remain detached from initial impressions and outcomes. Inclusive Leaders avoid becoming overly attached to a single solution and remain open to revisiting and revising decisions as new insights emerge. This flexibility allows for more balanced and effective decision-making, free from the constraints of ego or preconceived notions.

3. Authentic Communication with Empathy

In a world of fragmented realities, authenticity in communication is essential. Leaders should be transparent about their own struggles and their own limitations of knowledge and information. Showing vulnerability and creating a safe space for open, honest dialogue encourages team members to share their insights and perspectives. When people feel heard, they are more likely to engage in meaningful discussions, reconsider their biases, and adapt their views. I find them willing to adapt and modify decisions as necessary to better reflect the values of the group. Even if a decision has been made, they reflect on its potential impact on different groups and consider whether adjustments are needed to promote fairness and equity. This approach fosters trust and inclusivity, ensuring that decisions reflect the diverse values and needs of the group.

So very important to consider. A mistake I often see new leaders make is to discount perspectives that do not immediately sound right to them. Curiosity is the key to overcoming this. Be curious and as the why they have that perspective. So often you will uncover something important.
