How would you distinct data from information?

Alluding to my previous article, "What is data? How is data collected? What is data used for? " (click the link below to revisit);

Let us consider how data and information relate.

While data and information are used interchangeably, they have distinct difference.

Data refers to raw, unprocessed facts and figures. It is typically in the form of numbers, text, or other inputs that have not been organized, cleaned or analyzed. Data on its own does not hold much meaning. For example, a list of temperatures (e.g., 20°C, 25°C, 30°C) is just data.

Information is the result of processing and analyzing raw data to give it meaning and context. It is data that has been interpreted, organized, and presented in a way that is useful and relevant to a specific context or purpose. Using the temperature example, if you organize the data in a chart to show the temperature trends over time, it becomes meaningful information.

In summary, data is the raw material, while information is the refined end product that has meaning and can be used for decision-making or gaining new knowledge. Data becomes information after it has been processed and given context.

Tomorrow, we visualize a temperature chart with some context.
