How to Beat Procrastination and Get More Done in Your Business...

"I’ll do it tomorrow." – The Biggest Lie We Tell Ourselves

It was 10 AM, and I was staring at my laptop screen.

The business plan I had promised myself I’d finish by the afternoon?

Still incomplete.

The emails I needed to send?

Unopened.

The marketing strategy I was supposed to refine?

Barely touched.

Instead, I had spent hours scrolling through social media, watching random YouTube videos, and convincing myself that I was “researching.”

Sound familiar?

Procrastination is the silent killer of dreams, and if you're a business owner, coach, or consultant, it can cost you money, growth, and opportunities.

But here’s the good news:

you can beat procrastination, take control of your time, and accomplish more in your business than ever before.

In this post, I’ll break down why we procrastinate, how it impacts our business, and—most importantly—how to stop it once and for all.

Let’s dive in!

Why Do We Procrastinate? (And Why It’s Not Just Laziness)

Most people think procrastination is just being lazy, but that’s not true. Even the most ambitious and hardworking people struggle with it.

The real reason we procrastinate?

🔹 Fear of failure – “What if this doesn’t work?”

🔹 Perfectionism – “I need it to be perfect before I launch.”

🔹 Overwhelm – “There’s so much to do, I don’t know where to start.”

🔹 Lack of motivation – “I’m not feeling inspired right now.”

🔹 Instant gratification – “I’ll just check Instagram for a minute… (3 hours later).

Instead of being lazy or disorganized, people usually put things off because they aren't in the right mood to complete the task.

Doing so places you firmly inside the procrastination doom loop. Since you've decided that you aren't in the right mood to work, you distract yourself with other tasks -- checking email, checking the news, cleaning your desk, talking to a coworker, etc. -- and by the time you come up for air, you feel guilty for having wasted so much time.

This only worsens your mood, and as the deadline draws closer, you feel worse than you did when you first put off the task.

Understanding why we procrastinate is the first step to overcoming it.

Now, let’s move on to the practical strategies that will help you get more done in your business.

1. The 5-Minute Rule: Trick Your Brain Into Starting

Have you ever noticed that the hardest part of any task is getting started?

Your brain sees a big project and immediately says, "Nope, too much work!" But what if you told yourself, "I'll just work on this for 5 minutes"?

This is called the 5-Minute Rule—commit to just 5 minutes of work. Once you start, you’ll often keep going because the hardest part (starting) is over.

Example: If you need to write content for your business, tell yourself, “I’ll just write for 5 minutes.” Before you know it, you’re in the flow!

2. The Eisenhower Matrix: Prioritize Like a CEO

One major reason business owners procrastinate is because they feel overwhelmed with tasks.

To fix this, use the Eisenhower Matrix to categorize your tasks:

👉 Example: Instead of spending hours on tasks that don’t grow your business (like tweaking your website design for the 10th time), focus on money-making activities like sales, marketing, and client engagement.

3. Time Blocking: Schedule Your Success

Many entrepreneurs react to their day instead of controlling it. If you start your day thinking, "I'll just work on whatever needs to be done," you're setting yourself up for procrastination.

The solution? Time blocking.

👉 Allocate specific time slots for tasks like:

Client work (10 AM - 12 PM)

Marketing & social media (1 PM - 2 PM)

Product creation (3 PM - 4 PM)

Emails & admin (4 PM - 5 PM)

By giving each task a fixed time slot, you’ll be less likely to procrastinate and more likely to get things done.

4. The 2-Minute Rule: Kill Small Tasks Instantly

Some tasks aren’t worth putting on a to-do list because they take less than 2 minutes to complete. Instead of delaying them, do them immediately.

Example:

  • Replying to a short email? Do it now.
  • Sending an invoice? Do it now.
  • Posting on LinkedIn? Do it now.

This stops small tasks from piling up, reducing mental clutter and making you feel more accomplished.

5. Eliminate Distractions: Create a Procrastination-Free Zone

Your environment plays a huge role in your productivity. If you keep your phone next to you while working, you’ll be tempted to check it. If your workspace is cluttered, your mind will be too.

How to Create a Distraction-Free Workspace:

Put your phone on “Do Not Disturb”

Use website blockers like Freedom or Cold Turkey

Work in focused 25- or 50-minute sessions (Pomodoro Technique)

Keep only essential tools on your desk

The fewer distractions you have, the more productive you'll be.

6. Accountability: Use Public Pressure to Your Advantage

One of the best ways to beat procrastination? Tell someone about your goal.

When you publicly commit to something, you're less likely to back out because you don’t want to disappoint others.

Example:

  • Announce on LinkedIn that you’re launching a new course on a specific date.
  • Join a mastermind or accountability group where you have to report progress.
  • Get an accountability partner to check in on you weekly.

When others are watching, you’ll stay motivated to take action.

7. Reward Yourself: Make Productivity Fun

Your brain loves rewards. Instead of seeing work as pain, associate it with pleasure by rewarding yourself after completing tasks.

Example:

  • Finish writing that proposal? Enjoy a coffee break.
  • Complete your content for the week? Watch your favorite Netflix episode.
  • Hit a sales goal? Buy yourself something nice.

By doing this, you train your brain to see productivity as something exciting, not stressful.

Final Thoughts: Take Action Today!

Procrastination isn't just a habit—it’s a business killer. The longer you delay taking action, the more opportunities you miss.
