How to Avoid Burnout By Unplugging

How to Avoid Burnout By Unplugging

There’s no question that being in business these days can feel like a 24-hour deal. There are a thousand ways to be always plugged in, and staying up to speed with everything that’s happening around us can easily take over our schedules and our brains. What happens when this goes too far for too long? Burnout. No thanks.

To avoid mental burnout, consider the art of unplugging. You can even intentionally schedule it into your week (or weekend) at key points for maximum effect. This may mean turning off your phone each night, saving weekend emails for Monday, or committing to a full vacation each year. Whatever it means to you, it's worth it to figure out.

Being “on” at all times can actually stifle your creative flow and impact your effectiveness. Brains that are overworked and stretched thin don’t always produce the best solutions. What does a better frame of mind offer? A relaxed and refreshed approach, a curious and motivated mind.

Taking time to regularly decompress can pay off huge both in the short term and long term, but it’s important that you start small so you stay committed. It’s a lot like exercising at the gym or changing food habits - trying to do too much all at once may backfire.

Other ways to unplug

  • Reduce after-hours communication - set a cutoff time to shift focus from professional to personal life.
  • Write down tomorrow’s to-do list today so you’re not thinking about it all night or checking if you missed something after hours.
  • Have an end-of-day or end-of-week ritual to signal your transition from work to personal time.

Taking the time to intentionally unplug can help you to recharge for another productive workday, gain a better work-life balance, achieve more success, and greatly reduce the chance of burnout along the way.
