Insights x Design Ep. 21 (Conor Grennan - Chief AI Architect)

Behavioral Changes and Tools

  • People often seek tools as shortcuts for behavioral change, but true transformation comes from within.
  • Providing tools doesn't necessarily lead to behavioral changes; instead, it's the behavior that influences change.
  • The misconception that a tool alone can alter behavior results in many unused tools like dust-gathering treadmills.
  • People's requests for tools often stem from a desire to expedite the process of change rather than understanding the core of behavioral transformation.

"Behavior the American economy is built on the idea that a tool will change behavior."

Embracing Cultural Humility

  • Acknowledging the tendency to view one's culture as superior highlights a subtle, perhaps subconscious superiority complex.
  • Reflecting on experiences in Nepal challenged the notion of cultural superiority and the idea of one way being objectively better than another.
  • Recognizing the creativity and innovation fostered by different cultural practices led to questioning and reshaping deeply held beliefs.

"I am really accustomed to thinking this is how I've always done it and this is the best way to do it."

Importance of Human Involvement in AI Development

  • Stressing the significance of including humans in the AI process to maintain a balanced perspective and effectiveness.
  • Describing a realization where technical prowess wasn't the key to utilizing generative AI, emphasizing the need for human understanding and integration.
  • Transitioning from a focus solely on technology to emphasizing the human element as critical in driving successful AI adoption and adaptation.

"Keeping a human in the loop is like keeping a heart in a human body—it's the only thing augmenting off; it's not doing something by itself."

Nervous Excitement Surrounding AI Development

  • Expressing apprehension over the inherent unpredictability and radical nature of AI advancements.
  • Identifying unpredictability and a sense of the unknown as primary sources of concern in the AI domain.
  • Balancing excitement and nervousness, appreciating the transformative potential while acknowledging the risks and uncertainties associated with AI progression.

"The most nervous is just how radically unpredictable."

Ethical Philosophy in AI Implementation

  • The approach to ethical considerations in AI involves continual iteration based on real-world interactions and feedback to mold a suitable paradigm.
  • This iterative process is essential to shape individuals' mindsets when engaging with AI technology ethically.
  • In training sessions and collaborations with numerous companies, the speaker emphasizes the importance of breaking down old paradigms and constructing new ones aligned with ethical usage of AI.

The speaker underlines the need for an iterative approach to establishing ethical guidelines for AI use to create suitable mindsets and paradigms.

Philosophies on Correct User Interaction

  • Conor Grennan emphasizes the importance of understanding why people use technology incorrectly, attributing it to our brains not grasping its purpose as it doesn't directly replace anything.
  • He illustrates the concept with an analogy of using a treadmill incorrectly due to seeking quick rewards over long-term benefits.
  • To rectify this, he advocates for recognizing and highlighting misconceptions, then introducing new ways of approaching technology usage.
  • Emphasizing a need to shift perspectives, he aims to help individuals and teams grasp the correct methods of interaction.

"Our brains don't really know what this thing is and it doesn't really replace anything... I try to shine a spotlight on what's going wrong and then I try to build new paradigms."

Insights x Design Ep. 21 (Conor Grennan - Chief AI Architect)

  • Grennan discusses the importance of presenting AI in an exuberant manner to engage people who may not be familiar with the technology.
  • He emphasizes that highlighting AI's benefits passionately is necessary to encourage people to adopt and utilize it effectively.
  • Grennan contrasts his approach with an individual named Claude who preferred discussing AI solely based on facts and not with enthusiasm.

"I think that's going to be better. I really genuinely think it's going to make their life better, and Claud was like, like I understand your point, but I still think that can be accomplished."

Building AI from the Ground Up

  • The focus is on building AI from scratch rather than just overseeing existing applications, particularly emphasizing behavior change.
  • The approach involves constructing AI to reflect NYU Stern's vision and strategy in addressing this challenge.

"It's not about a lot of different AI applications; it's about how we change behavior."

Mastery of statistical and analysis tools is a substitute skill for generative AI. Substitute skills lose value when AI out competes them. They get `inflated away` . Complementary skills gain in value: An example complementary skills could the ability to fluently use higher math as a creative language, or perhaps the language of economics.
