Happy July 4'th
“On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom. The Committee of Five Founding Fathers - Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston – drafted the document with Jefferson writing most of its content.” A True Nation with a True Meaning of Democracy, a true meaning of life, a true meaning of liberty, a true meaning of happiness, a true meaning of freedom of speech and with a true meaning of freedom of conscience was born. America was born this day.
John Hancock (President of the Second Continental Congress) was the first signer of the document. Benjamin Franklin (representing Pennsylvania), was the oldest signer (age 70) of the document. Edward Rutledge (South Carolina) was the youngest (age 26) signer of the declaration of independence. Two future presidents also signed this document (John Adams, the second president and Thomas Jefferson, the third).
Many have defined and interpreted the FREEDOM different ways but the meaning remain same. If there is no democracy, there is no freedom. People of any state on this globe having any other type of government do not have a true democracy. The definition of real democratic government resides in Abraham Lincoln’s quote “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Democracy Is the Best Form of Government. Churchill said "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." ….and failed, I would say. Democracy does have many flaws and problems but all the others have more problems.
The elements of the democracy are freedom (freedom of speech, freedom of work, freedom to attain education, freedom to be the part of the government, freedom of ownership), liberty, life and happiness.
George Orwell has stated liberty as “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”
Voltaire said "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." What a statement for the freedom of speech!!! This responsibility of defending it lies with the President of the United States and the congress. Free Press is the voice of the people and any time when this voice is endangered by any one, this becomes the responsibility of the office of the president and the congress to stand up and defend and protect to the fullest of their ability not that they fight the press in a ring and put it down. The day it is presented as it was couple days ago in a tweet, that day will be a shameful day for democracy. That day will be the beginning of the sad demise of the democracy and the freedom of the people. It is not called as “the modern day of presidency”.
George Washington himself has stated, "If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter." American people do not want to become the sheep being herded to the slaughter house. Therefore, the freedom of the press is of immense importance for the mere existence of the democracy. That must not be put down the way it was in a tweet few days ago. And if it is, then I think Ronald Reagan was very right in saying
"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same."
