HANDBOOK ON HOW TO USE and STORE YOUR BROACHES – Part 2

For over 40 years, Bart projects and manufactures broaches on request, and it offers a broaching service, with which the company started its activities. Today we have the pleasure to share with you some secrets on how to use and conserve broaches. We hope this guide will help you.

Broaches are often considered disposable tools when they wear out, but with a simple maintenance or repair actions, we can save the broaches and allow extending the life of tool.

RE- SHARPENING:

Broaches should be re-sharpened immediately, to prevent an excessive stretch of wear, which may require the removal of a considerable part of tooth width. However, how do you know when re-sharpening your broach?

First, if you feel a change in rounding chip. This should not be in any way discontinuous; in reverse must be continuous respect to the depth of gullet.

Another alarm bell is the speed of broach during the manufacturing. In fact, the wear of cutting edges does work broach more slowly than at the beginning.

If not, you can rely on your experience: the tooth wear is visible to naked eye.

We always recommend re-sharpening your tool directly by manufacturer of broach, because he knows used material and its construction. If you turned to another company, you should know that there is no need to provide any data because the rake angle should be engraved on your tool.

Beware keyway broaches! Their re-sharpening takes place on a magnetic base and you need to demagnetize before use them. This work must be done by who re-sharps your broach, but it is best to check if they have been demagnetized before using your tool.
