Growing Strong: How Trees Can Teach Us Many Things
I feel privileged to live in a small community surrounded by nature and spend a considerable amount of time exploring the forests. During my time in the forest, I have come to appreciate the remarkable diversity of trees and their unique growth patterns. For instance, some trees grow exceptionally tall with seemingly weak roots, while others have extensive roots but never grow as tall as their counterparts. Additionally, I have observed that many trees grow in clusters, but only a select few achieve their full potential in terms of height and stature. These observations have led me to ponder the perfect conditions that allow trees to thrive and reach their full potential, and how this is analogous to success as an entrepreneur.
Trees are some of the most remarkable living organisms on our planet. They can grow to towering heights and live for hundreds, even thousands, of years. But what makes trees truly fascinating is their ability to adapt and grow stronger under a wide range of environmental conditions and stressors.
Trees do not grow tall by eliminating stress and problems, they embrace the stress that leads to growth. We shouldn't try to eliminate stress, we should learn to embrace it, learn from it and let it help us achieve success.
Trees, like entrepreneurs, must deal with a constantly changing environment. They are exposed to different levels of sunlight, temperature fluctuations, water availability, soil quality, and wind conditions. These stressors can have a profound impact on their growth and overall health. However, trees have developed remarkable strategies to survive and thrive under these conditions.
One of the most notable adaptations of trees is their ability to sway and bend in the wind. Wind can be one of the most significant stressors that trees face, especially in open, exposed areas. But rather than trying to resist the wind, trees have evolved to go with the flow. Their trunks and branches are flexible, allowing them to bend and sway without breaking. This not only helps them to withstand the stress of strong winds, but it also encourages them to grow stronger. The constant movement of the trunk and branches triggers the production of a hormone called abscisic acid, which strengthens the tree's structure.
In addition to wind, trees must also deal with the competition from other trees for sunlight, nutrients, and water. In a forest, trees grow close together, and they must adapt to limited resources. To overcome this, trees develop long root systems that can reach deep into the soil, allowing them to access water and nutrients that are beyond the reach of other trees. They also adapt their growth patterns, producing longer, narrower branches that can grow upward to reach the sunlight above the canopy.

Similarly, entrepreneurs must learn to adapt to the challenges of the business world. Like trees, they must be flexible and resilient, able to weather the storms and adapt to changing circumstances. Entrepreneurship is a challenging and stressful endeavor. It requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to face the unknown. However, the stress and challenges that come with entrepreneurship can be valuable contributors to success.
Just as a tree's ability to bend and sway in the wind triggers the production of abscisic acid, the stress and challenges of entrepreneurship can trigger the development of valuable skills and traits. These include resilience, perseverance, and adaptability, which are essential for any entrepreneur looking to succeed. Moreover, the competition in the business world can encourage entrepreneurs to develop innovative strategies and techniques, just as trees develop longer, narrower branches to reach the sunlight above the canopy.
Trees are an inspiring metaphor for how we grow as entrepreneurs. Their ability to adapt and thrive under a wide range of environmental conditions and stressors is a testament to the power of resilience and adaptability. As entrepreneurs, we too must learn to be flexible and resilient, able to adapt to changing circumstances and weather the storms of the business world. The stress and challenges that come with entrepreneurship can be valuable contributors to our success, helping us to develop the skills and traits necessary to thrive in a constantly changing world.
Embrace the stress and your surroundings. Everything is helping you to grow strong roots and succeed.
