Got Body Image Issues? Anyone?
Do you spend more time focusing on what you dislike about your physical appearance than what you do like about it?
Are you so self-conscious about your looks that you avoid people, certain activities, situations, and events? Perhaps your high school reunion, family gathering or even a pool/beach party where you were expected to bare all in swimwear.
If you answered "Yes" to the above questions or if at least it resonated with you a tad bit...well you AND I are among the 7.9 out of 10 American adults ages 18+ who experience "body image dissatisfaction"*.
What is Body Image Dissatisfaction?
To understand what body image dissatisfaction is you have to first understand the term "body image".
Body image is the perception a person has of their physical appearance and the thoughts or feelings that ensue from that perception. The thoughts and feelings can be positive, negative or both and often are influenced by individual (internal) and environmental (external) factors.
Body image dissatisfaction is therefore the discontent perception a person has about their physical appearance and the ongoing discontent or negative thoughts and feelings that ensue. Simply put, it is the disparity we see between our current body versus our "perfect" body.
Body image dissatisfaction is often assumed to be only weight related, but in actuality, dissatisfaction comes in all forms! A person could experience dissatisfaction with any part of their body, from their hair to their toes and every limb in between.
Experiencing occasional/some level of body dissatisfaction or insecurity is quite normal. Where it becomes a problem is when it begins to negatively impact a person's daily life, social interactions, relationships, career, and most especially mental health.

Body image is very much a thing of the mind more than it is of the body. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a habit of incorporating mindset reset routines into your daily life. For example, memorizing bible scripture, self-affirmation, inspirational quotes, prayer, meditation etc.
Understand that your body is just one aspect of your being and not you in totality.
Remember your overall health is predicated by your mental health.
Lastly, believe...truly believe that you are ENOUGH!
