Google's push for Progressive Web Apps

Google’s big push for remaking the web into Progressive Web Apps is positioned as Google once again helping make the internet a better faster experience for everyone by pushing developers to a new performance standard with the carrot being the Google search will like you more and it just happens that it would help their search business as everything leans toward mobile. Good guy Google pushing the web forward for everyone, but I can’t help but think that this move is more clever than they are being given credit for. In the world of PWA there will no longer be a need to build native apps for every OS, On the surface this seems like an odd move for a corporation with a huge app store, it becomes less so if it's a strategic move against Apple which relies much more on their app store revenue than Google does.
