Germany reaches 5.3GW in installed offshore wind capacity

18 January, 2018

Germany installed 1.25GW of new offshore wind capacity in 2017, bringing the total to over 5.3GW.

New capacity in 2017 was up from the 818MW installed in 2016, but below the 2.2GW added in 2015.

There were 222 new offshore wind turbines connected to the grid last year, bringing the total to 1,169 machines.

Two large-scale offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 780MW are currently under construction in Germany: the 395MW Merkur project in the North Sea and E.ON’s 385MW Arkona facility in the Baltic Sea.

In 2016, the UK held the top spot for the most installed offshore wind capacity in the world with 5.5GW, followed by Germany with approximately 4.05GW.
