🌎 The Future is Green in Maine

Edition 3: Maine Green Giants

Dear Readers,

For the past decade, ACT | The Alliance for Climate Transition has championed innovation as the foundation of a thriving clean energy economy. Whether it's improving grid resilience, expanding equitable access to clean technologies, or accelerating the deployment of climate solutions, our work is rooted in a simple idea: the future is built by bold innovators, and it starts now.

Clean energy isn’t just about reducing emissions—it’s about improving quality of life, creating economic opportunity, and empowering communities to shape their own energy future. This month, we turn our focus to Maine's Green Giants—leaders who are revolutionizing key sectors like energy generation, heating efficiency, and marine sustainability. These companies are pioneering the innovations that will shape a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Together, we’re building the ecosystem that makes this innovation possible. Thank you for being part of it.

Joe Curtatone President, ACT

🌎 Why Climatetech Still Matters

The clean energy transition is accelerating—but it’s not happening fast enough. Climatetech remains one of the most powerful tools we have to tackle not only emissions, but also energy affordability, resilience, and equity. At ACT, we’re working to ensure these technologies don’t stay stuck in the lab. Through programs like Cleantech Open Northeast / ACT and Navigate | The Alliance for Climate Transition , we support early-stage founders with training, mentorship, and exposure to investors.

This is where ideas become action—and where the climate economy comes to life.

Check out our website to explore all the other work we’re doing to accelerate the climate transition, from policy advocacy to community engagement.

👣 On the Ground & In the News: Turning Words into Action

ACT is proud to not just talk about bold climate policy—we’re out in the field making it happen.

On April 8th, our President Joe Curtatone published an op-ed in the Portland Press Herald calling for the elevation of Maine’s Governor’s Energy Office to a cabinet-level Department of Energy Resources. As Joe explained, this move is crucial for aligning Maine’s energy leadership with national best practices and ensuring the state can meet its clean energy and climate goals.

Now, our Policy team—led by Tim Snyder and Natalie Hildt Treat —is on the ground, advocating for this critical change. Tim will be testifying in support of LD 1270, making the case for a stronger, more coordinated energy strategy in Maine—one that supports 100% clean electricity by 2040, unlocks 3 gigawatts of offshore wind, and enables competitive procurement of clean, affordable energy.

At ACT, we take pride in having boots on the ground, driving real progress through action—not just ideas.

A huge thank you to Tim for his tireless leadership and to Jeff Marks at CLIMATEWORK MAINE for his continued support. Stay tuned as we work to push this key legislation forward! 💪

🔬 This Month’s Spotlight: Maine Green Giants

Peregrine Turbine Technologies

Article content

Revolutionizing Power Generation

Peregrine Turbine Technologies is at the forefront of innovation with their advanced supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO₂) turbine systems. These groundbreaking turbines are set to transform power generation by drastically improving fuel efficiency while reducing emissions. The technology also lowers maintenance and repair costs, making it a game-changer in both energy production and storage. CEO David Stapp describes their journey:

"Peregrine is five to seven years ahead of others in bringing this technology to market. PTT’s sCO₂ transformational technologies are young, with an expected value growth curve of 30 years or more."

Peregrine’s innovation is not just a technological leap but a sustainable pathway to modernize the global power sector, addressing climate change head-on while enhancing operational efficiency.

Amply Energy, Inc.

Simplifying Decarbonization with Heat Pump Tech

Amply Energy, Inc. is empowering HVAC contractors to modernize home heating systems through their innovative software. By integrating AI and augmented reality, Amply's tool allows contractors to design and sell the right home heat pump systems more efficiently. The app’s real-time calculations enable comfort advisors to quickly generate accurate designs, saving time and boosting customer satisfaction.

Amply is setting a new standard for decarbonizing residential heating, helping both contractors and customers make sustainable choices with ease and precision.

FINSULATE USA

Article content

Redefining Marine Maintenance with Nature-Inspired Innovation

FINSULATE USA tackles a significant environmental challenge by offering a non-toxic alternative to traditional antifouling paint. Their eco-friendly adhesive wrap is inspired by sea urchins and effectively prevents marine life from adhering to boat hulls. Unlike conventional paints that dissolve and contribute to microplastic pollution, Finsulate’s wrap is durable and significantly reduces the need for maintenance, lowering the vessel’s environmental impact.

Co-Founder Bernard Hidier highlights the innovation:

"Until now, the only solution has been toxic antifouling paints that harm the marine environment. Finsulate wraps solve this age-old problem with a non-toxic, cost-effective, and durable solution, inspired by Nature itself."

By pioneering sustainable marine maintenance, Finsulate is not only reducing costs but also protecting marine ecosystems from harmful pollutants.

⚖️ Policy in Action: Turning Innovation Into Impact

ACT recently hosted a Clean Energy Day in Maine in collaboration with our partners at the Maine Renewable Energy Association (MREA). This event highlighted our commitment to supporting local innovation and advocating for policies that empower Maine’s climatetech pioneers. Our Maine Green Giants – Peregrine Turbine Technologies, Amply Energy, and Finsulate – represent the cutting edge of clean energy solutions, and we are proud to fight for them right in their own state.

Together, ACT and MREA are pushing for policy priorities like energy independence, advanced grid technologies, equitable access to renewable energy, and workforce development, ensuring that Maine remains at the forefront of the clean energy transition. By advocating for predictable and fair taxation, streamlined siting and permitting, and continued support for offshore wind, we aim to create a more sustainable and prosperous future.

We are committed to supporting Maine’s clean energy innovators as they shape the future of sustainable technology.

📉 What’s at Risk: IRA Rollbacks in the Northeast

As we mentioned, each edition of this newsletter will spotlight how proposed rollbacks of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) could impact a different Northeast state. This month, we focus on Maine—where the stakes are high.

Thanks to the IRA, Maine has already seen:

✅ $340M in clean energy and transportation investments

✅ 200+ jobs announced

✅ 112 new clean energy facilities launched

✅ 90 sites manufacturing clean tech right here in the U.S.

What repeal would mean:

🚫 Over 1,500 jobs lost in 2030 alone

🚫$52M in added household energy costs by 2035

🚫 $21M in GDP lost by 2030

These aren’t just numbers—they’re a warning. ACT is committed to ensuring our region doesn’t lose the momentum we’ve worked so hard to build.
