🌱 Why Climatetech Matters in 2025
The climate crisis is accelerating, and 2025 is a pivotal year for action. Climatech startups are leading the charge in transforming energy, transportation, manufacturing, and infrastructure. The Northeast is a hotspot for innovation, home to some of the most promising clean technology ventures that can decarbonize industries and scale sustainable solutions.
This newsletter series will spotlight game-changing climatetech startups across the Northeast—state by state—to showcase how they are reshaping the economy, environment, and job market.
🚀 Key sectors driving the climate transition: Energy Innovation – Transforming how we generate and consume power Sustainable Mobility – Expanding electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure Green Manufacturing – Decarbonizing high-emission industries Smart Infrastructure – Modernizing energy and utility grids Water & Marine Sustainability – Protecting clean water and marine ecosystems
If we want to accelerate the climate transition, these are the areas that need the most investment, policy support, and innovation.
None of this progress happens in isolation—climatetech is thriving because of the incredible ecosystem of accelerators, forward-thinking companies, and bold leadership from legislators driving this movement forward. Their commitment to innovation and sustainability is what makes the Northeast a leader in the clean energy transition. We are incredibly thankful to Individuals like Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and incubators like The Engine , Greentown Labs , and the government economic development agency Massachusetts Clean Energy Center for their dedication to pushing this progress and making real change happen.
We are proud to host Climate Tech on the Plaza, an exciting opportunity for climatetech innovators to showcase their solutions at Boston City Hall Plaza this spring, providing a platform for startups to demonstrate their technology to key stakeholders and the public. Thank you to the City of Boston , Downtown Boston Alliance , Massachusetts Clean Energy Center , and Schneider Electric for making this event possible!
🌟 Accelerating Climate Tech: Cleantech Open Northeast & Navigate
Before we introduce our Green Giants, we want to highlight two key programs that are catalyzing climate innovation in the Northeast by helping startups scale, secure funding, and drive impact.
As one of the largest and longest-running cleantech startup accelerators in the region, Cleantech Open Northeast has helped 642 startups raise over $2 billion in funding and create 7,800+ jobs. The program provides a five-and-a-half-month accelerator, offering mentorship, business skills training, investor connections, and commercialization support for early-stage climatetech companies. By fostering a strong innovation ecosystem, Cleantech Open is paving the way for transformative clean energy solutions.
The Navigate program focuses on accelerating climate tech commercialization, providing startups with industry connections, investment opportunities, and tailored business support. With a network spanning North America and Europe, the program has supported 432 startups, leading to over $9 billion in funding and 11,400+ jobs created. Through Investor Corporate Customer Connect (ICCC) events, Navigate bridges the "missing middle" funding gap, helping groundbreaking climate solutions scale to deployment.
These programs are key drivers of clean energy and climate innovation, helping startups go from concept to commercialization. Now, let’s meet the Green Giants, who are leading the charge!

🔬 Innovation Needs Investment: Bridging the "Missing Middle"
The challenge: Climatetech is booming, but many startups face a funding gap where they’ve outgrown early-stage funding but lack the capital to grow.
The reality:
🔹 $2 billion+ raised by Cleantech Open Northeast alumni
🔹 Mid-stage funding is scarce, preventing startups from reaching full deployment
🔹Lack of investment keeps even the most promising technologies from scaling
Bridging this funding gap is critical to ensuring innovative climatetech solutions reach commercial scale.
📰 In the News:
A recent Latitude Media article highlights the importance of First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) climate projects and the financial hurdles they face. It underscores how traditional infrastructure investors are often hesitant to back FOAK projects due to the perceived risks, leaving many promising technologies stranded before they can achieve full deployment.
In line with these efforts, we are extremely proud to partner with MassCEC on their new CriticalMass program, which provides grants and offers partnerships to help find projects and close the funding gap for eligible climatetech startups undertaking deployment-scale projects. By supporting FOAK projects at this crucial stage, programs like CriticalMass play a key role in closing the funding gap and accelerating the commercialization of groundbreaking climate solutions.
📅 What’s Next?
In our next edition, we’ll explore Connecticut’s climatetech leaders, including:
