The Future of 5G Massive MIMO (mMIMO)

The Future of 5G Massive MIMO (mMIMO)

As part of the company’s 5G, 6G & Open RAN coverage, ABI Research recently published its 5G Massive MIMO market data (MD-MIMO-101). In these forecasts, our analysts estimate the number of 5G Massive Multiple Input, Multiple Output (mMIMO) deployments by region and Radio Access Network (RAN) type (Open RAN versus Traditional RAN). These latest market developments can help telco infrastructure/equipment vendors identify business opportunities and lay the path for governments to support mMIMO deployments.

Key Takeaways

  • ABI Research reports more than 10 million 5G mMIMO deployments in 2023, an 81% increase from 2022.
  • Growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 39.7%, deployments will reach nearly 43 million by 2028.
  • Asia-Pacific dominates the mMIMO market, followed by North America and Europe. While North America is currently the second-largest market, Europe will sidestep the region by 2027.
  • It’s clear that Open RAN technology still needs to mature, as adoption will remain minimal throughout the forecast period.

Open RAN versus Traditional RAN

  • Although Open RAN mMIMO deployments will experience a robust CAGR of 164.7%, traditional RAN will continue to dominate deployments.
  • Whereas Traditional RAN deployments will eclipse the 35 million mark by 2028, Open RAN deployments will reach under 7 million by thenprimarily comprise.
  • Both Open RAN and Traditional RAN are close to parity between 32T32R and 64T64R configurations.
  • Our analysts assess that mMIMO revenue will peak in 2024 for Traditional RAN and in 2027 for Open RAN.

Regional Outlook for 5G Massive MIMO

  • Countries in the Asia-Pacific region easily dominate the 5G mMIMO market, accounting for 73% of total deployments by 2028. This translates into an installed base increasing from 8.2 million in 2023 to 31.3 million by 2028.
  • North America had 1.2 million 5G mMIMO deployments in 2023, placing second worldwide. Europe was closely trailing at 780,000 deployments. However, Europe will grow at a 57.3% CAGR compared to North America’s 40.5%, resulting in Europe overtaking North America for second place (5.2 million deployments by 2028).
  • A key differentiator for North America is that its mMIMO deployments are primarily of the 64T64R configuration. Asia-Pacific and European deployments are mostly of the 32T32R configuration.
  • Also of note is that Open RAN accounts for almost twice as many 5G mMIMO deployments in Europe and North America than in Asia-Pacific. By 2028, Open RAN will make up 12% of the mMIMO market share in Asia-Pacific, a far cry from Europe’s 22% market share and North America’s 23% market share.
  • Finally, it’s worth mentioning that mmWave deployments are virtually non-existent in Asia-Pacific and Europe. Contrarily, Millimeter Wave (mmWave) 5G mMIMO deployments are more popular than 32T32R configurations in North America.
