From Sketchup to 3DsMax
Interior Renders: Switching from Sketch up to 3DsMax
Working in Decoration and Housing Design + 3D at the NBY IT Solution I discovered the exciting world of renders. What in principle was just another tool for the presentation of my end of project became my daily work tool.
At the School I learned how to handle several design programs: Autocad for the realization of plans and elevations, Sketchup for all the 3D modeling and Vray to make the renders that would complete the project. At the end of the Master I obviously focused on starting my career as an interior designer , but unconsciously I specialized in another parallel profession: 3D renderist / infographist .
As a good self-taught person, I found myself looking for tutorials and online courses to deepen and expand my knowledge in 3D modeling and rendering programs. The more tutorials I saw the more I wanted to learn; I felt an authentic fascination for all that these programs could allow me to do to show a project of Interior Design, to show in images all that my imagination generated when I saw a space to be reformed or changed.
Starting with Sketchup:
Since I already had a good base of the Sketchup program, acquired during my Master studies, I continued working with this program. Sketchup is an underrated program, to my knowledge. You can do really good infographics if you are meticulous with the elements you use in the scene and if you really manage Vray well for rendering and Photoshop for the postproduction of the rendered image. I think that to present and develop interior design projects is an optimal tool.
However, as I am expanding my knowledge in this field and getting to know the work of major industry leaders, such as Lunas.pro or Bertrand Benoit , I am more aware of the need to use other more powerful modeling programs. His works are simply perfect, elegant, impressive. Reaching that level of quality is a dream and a motivation to improve every day.
Looking for alternatives
Before starting in this 3D modeling, focused on the world of interior design, I knew the existence of the 3DsMax program, but in another sector, that of video games. When I discovered that this program was used in architecture I thought that it would not be necessary to learn it since to do interior info graphics it was enough with Sketchup. And part of the way it is. But I find the results obtained with 3Ds max so incredible that at least I have to try.
So I launched. I have started to learn this tool and the truth is that from the beginning I realize the potential of this program.
My beginnings with 3DsMax
My first impression when starting to work in 3Ds is that the interface is what I like the least, if I compare it with Sketchup. Being used to working with Sketchup I recognize that it is costing me a bit to adapt. Sketchup is much more intuitive, I can see the scene as a drawing and I can approach the objects to the fullest to see all the details. In 3Ds I do not see that distinction so differentiated between the ground and the horizon line, it reminds me a lot of the Autocad interface, and when I get too close to an object, I cut it, losing the degree of detail I'm used to in Sketchup. I guess it's all about getting used to it!
As for the way of working with the objects of the scene, both are completely different; in Sketch up from "boxes" I can go building my structure, the commands to modify or work with the elements of the scene are visible and direct access, the import of objects is also quite simple and visually I see the scene much clearer . In 3Ds from an object you add modifiers (there are thousands) and you apply these modifiers, with all their options, affecting vertices, edges, faces.... To move an element of the scene one has to take into account concepts such as Snaps, pivot points, etc. The import of objects is more complex (layers, textures, etc.).
And I've only seen the beginning!
I am aware that many hours of learning and practice await me, but the truth is that I am looking forward to reaching a level that will allow me to approach, even a little bit, my great referents. The important thing is what you enjoy with the process!
