🌲 Finding Belonging, Magic, and Play at YMCA Summer Camp 🌞
When I think back to my childhood, the YMCA was more than just a place to go after school—it was where I found my voice. At the YMCA in Hastings, Nebraska, I discovered that my double-jointed arms could do more than just freak out my friends; they were the key to the ultimate prank.
A few of us Y’s Kids cooked up a scheme: I pretended to break my arm. The teacher’s panicked face was priceless—until we yelled, “Just kidding!” We laughed until we couldn’t breathe, and in that moment, I felt like I truly belonged. It was the start of understanding that the YMCA wasn’t just a building—it was a place where people outside my home saw me and got me.
Fast-forward to now, and as a parent, I’m watching my son Jules create his own memories at Camp Collins. Last summer, he came back BEGGING to return. And honestly, I get it. Camp Collins is magical. Between the crafts, outdoor adventures, and the complete lack of cell service, you’re transported into a different world—one that celebrates the connection to nature and to each other. I've even heard rumors of a new maze in 2025!
In fact, Camp Collins will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2026. That means generations of kids have shared in their magic, learning what it means to belong through play. Whether it’s conquering the high ropes course, crafting something amazing, or simply roasting marshmallows under the stars, every experience inspires confidence, connection, and growth.
The Y’s summer programs are about much more than just filling time. They’re designed to:

And they do all of this while staying true to the YMCA’s mission: to practice love, respect, honesty, responsibility, and service.
I’d love to hear your favorite summer camp memory—drop it in the comments! And if you’re curious about Camp Collins or any of the Y’s programs, feel free to reach out. Day and Enrichment camp open for YMCA members on February 10 and non-members on February 17!
Because at the YMCA—it’s about belonging through play.
