The Fashion Industry Is Changing—Are You Ready to Stand Out?

Breaking into the fashion industry—or advancing within it—is about more than just talent. It’s about preparation, strategy, and positioning yourself to stand out in an increasingly competitive landscape.

The industry today demands much more than creativity. It requires you to master the fundamentals: crafting a standout CV, curating a professional LinkedIn presence, presenting a polished portfolio, and excelling in interviews. Add to this the need for a clear career search strategy, and it’s evident that success is the result of meticulous planning.

The Reality of the Industry

The competition is fierce. Over 50% of fashion design graduates aspire to start their own brands (Vogue Business), showcasing ambition but also highlighting the oversupply of talent without clear career progression pathways. This isn’t limited to fashion. Even in fields like business, 23% of Harvard MBA graduates were still seeking employment three months after graduation—a noticeable rise from the previous year (Wall Street Journal). The message is clear: talent alone isn’t enough. Strategy and preparation are essential.

So, ask yourself: are you truly prepared to take the next step in your career? And do you know how to be?

My Perspective: Bridging the Preparation Gap

As a Global Luxury Headhunter and Co-founder of MŌDUM, I’ve witnessed firsthand the gap between ambition and readiness. Whether working with graduates, senior managers, or directors, I often encounter individuals underprepared for their next transition. They may excel creatively but lack the tools to navigate the structural and strategic aspects of career growth.

Through my work at Profile Reconstruction, I’ve seen how personalized career coaching can bridge this gap. From crafting effective CVs and LinkedIn profiles to preparing for interviews and negotiating offers, preparation isn’t just helpful—it’s transformative.

Strategies for Success in Fashion

If you’re looking to stand out and elevate your career in fashion, here are key strategies to consider:

  1. Define Your Personal Brand Your personal brand should be clear across all platforms—CV, LinkedIn, portfolio, and social media. What’s your unique value? Why should a recruiter or brand choose you?
  2. Understand the Industry’s Fundamentals Fashion is more than creativity. Develop a solid understanding of business fundamentals, including marketing, sales, and supply chain processes. This knowledge sets you apart as someone who understands the big picture.
  3. Curate Your Network Build meaningful relationships within the industry. Attend events, connect with professionals on LinkedIn, and engage with content that aligns with your goals. Networking is as much about providing value to others as it is about seeking opportunities.
  4. Prepare for Change Whether transitioning to a new role or aiming for a promotion, preparation is key. Research your target role, practice interviews, and understand the company’s culture and values.
  5. Invest in Lifelong Learning The industry evolves quickly. Stay ahead by pursuing courses, certifications, and workshops to keep your skills relevant. As a tutor at the University of the Arts London, I’ve seen how continual learning fosters confidence and growth.

Final Thoughts

In the luxury and fashion industry, preparation is your foundation for success. It’s not just about knowing where you want to go—it’s about having the roadmap to get there.

Through my roles at MŌDUM, Profile Reconstruction, and as a lecturer, I’m passionate about empowering individuals to achieve their aspirations. Whether you’re a graduate entering the industry or a director seeking your next big role, the question remains the same:

Are you truly prepared—and do you know how to be?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic. What challenges have you faced in preparing for your next career move, and what strategies have worked for you? Let’s start a conversation.
