Executive Director's Report

Dear Mr. President,

Thank you.

You made a promise and you kept it. Your Statement on Marijuana Reform delivered on October 6th put words into action. You held true and let the tide roll in.

In historic times like these, the poets say it best. In the words of Seamus Heaney:

“So hope for a great sea-change
On the far side of revenge.
Believe that further shore
Is reachable from here.
Believe in miracles
And cures and healing wells.”

On behalf of everyone at CFCR, thank you, Mr. President.

President Biden's historic action this week makes the prospect of federal legalization all that more real. There will be a significant increase in legislative action to follow. And that puts regulation under a microscope because regulation is the implementation of legislation. So, it is with this in mind that we are pleased to announce that CFCR's webinar series is back this month with our most dynamic event to date – an in depth conversation with two of the nation’s leading cannabis experts from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) focusing on the agency’s approach to cannabis science, policy, and regulation.

Our next webinar will feature Dr. Janet Woodcock, Director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) and Dr. Patrick Cournoyer, Lead for the FDA’s Cannabis Product Committee (CPC). We're going to talk about the agency’s approach to regulation, the challenges involved, and the solutions that are realizable as industry stakeholders and regulatory scientists seek to improve public health and safety through good science and policy.

As FDA continues with its internal policy development regarding cannabis regulation, we hope that this webinar will help set the stage for future conversations. FDA is tasked with bringing good science and policy together to protect our health and safety. Cannabis, in particular, is a new challenge that requires us all to substantially rethink a regulatory framework for the future. CFCR understands the opportunity to get this right and to even serve as a model for other countries as we collectively tackle these same 21st Century healthcare and public safety obstacles.

You can REGISTER HERE for the webinar. And, please note that you can presubmit questions for our guests!

All my best,

Sarah

P.S. There has been exceptional reporting and analysis of President Biden's reform moves since the news dropped on Thursday. POLITICO has been all over the story and you can read an excellent synopsis HERE by Natalie Fertig.
