EPA's 2025 TSCA Inventory Update : Key Insights for Businesses

In January 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rolled out an updated version of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Inventory.

It covers the chemical substances that are:

·         Manufactured

·         Processed, or

·         Imported in the U.S. under TSCA, that do not otherwise qualify for an exemption or exclusion

Key highlights of the 2025 TSCA Inventory

·         It now includes a total of 86,847 substances

·         42,495 of these are active chemicals (in use across U.S. commerce)

·         The update also brings in new commercial activity data and regulatory flags like Significant New Use Rules (SNUR)

Best practices for businesses to maintain TSCA compliance

1.      Verify chemical status: Check whether the chemicals your business manufactures, processes, or imports are classified as active or inactive under the latest inventory.

2.      Keep detailed records: Maintain accurate documentation of all chemical substances in use, ensuring compliance with audits and reporting obligations.

3.      Assess compliance risks: Review your current chemical inventory to identify any substances requiring additional reporting or regulatory measures.
