Empowering Women: Actions Speak Louder Than Words
International Women’s Day (8 March) often sparks differing opinions. While the basic principles behind it are widely supported, there’s a growing sentiment that words alone are not enough. People want to see real evidence of actions being taken.
The simple truth is: while progress has been made, there is still a lot to do.
Reflecting on my career, when I started work I went to college on day release, to become a chartered surveyor. I was the only woman in a group of 30 male peers. The surveying profession was hugely male-dominated at the time, which I am delighted to say has changed over time. Growing up in a family of eight children – four boys and four girls – where we were all equal, this was my first experience in a predominantly all-male environment.
As the executive sponsor of the Women in Cadent community (one of seven employee-led groups), I am incredibly proud of our efforts to develop policies and support opportunities for women.
For example, we are the first utility with Fertility Friendly accreditation, as well as being a recognised menopause-friendly employer. We offer exceptional parental support packages, and create safe spaces to discuss women’s health. Allyship is crucial and is great to see a number of people, of all genders, getting involved in the conversation.
We are not perfect, and there is much more to be done. However, actions like these help us retain the best talent and show future colleagues – whether at school or those considering a career change – that engineering and utilities are great career choices.
