Electromembrane modules for solutions with high temperature, chemically aggressive substances and increased viscosity from MTLT Company
Company "Membranines Technologijos LT" (MTLT) staff succesfully completed a 10-year cycle of industrial testing and subsequent practical application of the innovative electromembrane modules of EMA-TM type, currently used at industrial enterprises of chemical, food, hydrometallurgical, power industries and metallurgical Plants.
Electromembrane module EMA-TM is the basic unit, which gave possibilities two-, three- and four-flows membrane stacks are made:
-classic, two-flows version, applied for deep demineralization of solutions and for concentration, as well as for the processes of diffusion dialysis and bipolar electrodialysis;
-three-flows version of the membrane stacks assembly, designed for the effective synthesis of new products, for example – alkaline or acid hydrolysis, as well as for the conversion of salts in the preparation of acid and alkali using bipolar membranes;
-four-flows assembly of the membrane stack to carry out continuous reaction of double decomposition of two different salts at the same time with the receipt of two new products.
Main differences and advantages.
Operating conditions:
- wide temperature range of processed working solutions in continuous mode, from +5°C to +70°C;
- possibilities of processing chemically aggressive substances with high concentrations, like as non-organic and organic acids, and different types of alkali;
- possibility of processing viscous solutions without additional dilution with water (for example - crude bioglycerin with a concentration up to 82 % wt, milk whey - 36% TS, whey protein concentrate - 40% TS, gelatin with a concentration of 25% TS, beet molasses and semi-products of sugar production up to 45% TS, etc.)
Technical advantages:
- the absence of external leakages and "sweating" of membrane stacks (dry surface);
- full tightness of membrane stacks, eliminating internal physical flows between the working ways (flows), which minimizes the loss of the target product;
- high coefficient of salts removal in one pass - up to 80% in one stage (via one module);
- special designs of spacers, that provide the possibility to assemble 2 -, 3-and 4-flows membrane stacks;
- maintainability of spacers and the rare need to replace them;
-longer service life of the used platinum anodes;
- low hydraulic resistance of the membrane stacks and as a result - minimal pressure loss on outlet;
- low operating pressure of feed flows at the inlet of the modules - not more 0.7 bar when modules installed in one stage;
- sequential placement and connection of up to 4 modules in the process line without the use of additional intermediate tanks and pumps in order to ensure desalting in single pass mode ("one-pass”);
-minimum time of finding of processing products in the equipment.
Announce: in 2019, MTLT Company planning to introduce to the market a new type of electromembrane module - EMA-TMH. The industrial prototype of this module has passed the final stages of pilot and industrial testing and will be installed to new facilities within this year. Innovative EMA-TMH type has all the advantages of the previous generation modules, but it has an important design difference: feed flows of the products and concentrates - in the mode of direct ("true") counter flow inside the membrane stack (flows movement towards each other on the sides of the membrane), which increases the efficiency and quality of the electrodialysis process.
