The STAR Format

This approach helps organise your thoughts in a clear and logical structure, using the following four components: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. The Situation and Task sections set the context for the specific scenario, while the Action and Result sections detail the steps you took to achieve the desired outcome. The STAR Format provides recruiters with a clear understanding of your involvement and contributions in particular situations. It’s essential to use strong, relevant examples to clearly show how you meet the criteria.

Below is an example: 

Role: Team Leader Selection Criteria: Must be able to communicate with influence and mentor junior staff. 

  • S (Situation) As a manager, I have been responsible for mentoring junior staff and leading colleagues in a way that encourages professional development. One instance where I demonstrated this was when one of my staff members was consistently falling behind and struggling to meet deadlines. I took the initiative to counsel them and provide guidance to help improve their performance. 
  • T (Task) To effectively communicate and provide sound advice, I knew I needed to create a safe, non-judgmental environment where my staff members would feel comfortable enough to discuss their challenges. 
  • A (Action) I encouraged them to speak openly without fear of judgment, allowing them to share their issues. It turned out they were dealing with personal problems at home that were affecting their work. I suggested measures such as reducing their work hours temporarily to give them time to manage these personal issues. I also recommended they speak to HR to explore options such as brief leave and directed them to the company’s professional development team for further support. 
  • R (Result) Following our discussion, the staff member was able to arrange a brief leave and returned to work after a week with renewed energy. They were able to overcome their personal challenges and, as a result, their performance significantly improved, allowing them to contribute effectively to the team. 

This example provides a glimpse into how the STAR Format can be used. To effectively utilise this method, it’s important to provide specific, detailed examples that clearly illustrate your actions, measurable outcomes, and improvements. Use statistics, numbers, and tangible results wherever possible. When writing your selection criteria responses, be sure to pay attention to any limitations or special instructions that may be included in the job description, such as word count, page format, or submission requirements. Following these guidelines ensures your response is polished, adheres to technical standards, and minimises the risk of disqualification.
