The leadership matrix is a tool designed to help leaders visualize and manage their involvement in different areas of the organization. The matrix is divided into four quadrants based on two key dimensions: expertise and level of detail.

  1. Vertical Axis: Represents the level of detail a leader is involved in, ranging from highly involved at the top to not highly involved at the bottom.
  2. Horizontal Axis: Represents the level of expertise, from high expertise on the left to low expertise on the right.

📚 Quadrant Descriptions

  1. Owning: Leaders spend time on areas they have high expertise in and are highly involved in the details. These are critical areas where their deep knowledge is essential for success.
  2. Learning: Leaders focus on areas where they are highly involved in the details but have lower expertise. This quadrant is about gaining new knowledge and understanding.
  3. Teaching: Leaders use their high expertise to mentor and guide others, but they are not as involved in the day-to-day details. This approach helps develop the skills of their team members.
  4. Delegating: Leaders delegate tasks to team members who have the necessary skills and knowledge. This allows leaders to manage areas where they have lower expertise and are not highly involved in the details.

Time Allocation

The matrix also helps leaders allocate their time effectively. For example:

  • 40% of time: Owning critical areas with high expertise and involvement.
  • 30% of time: Learning new areas with high detail involvement but lower expertise.
  • 15% of time: Teaching and mentoring in areas of high expertise.
  • 15% of time: Delegating tasks in areas of lower expertise.
