Introduction

When I first came across these dual-purpose lithium batteries, I saw them as a major leap from traditional deep-cycle batteries used for storage or electric vehicles. But then I remembered a video I watched years ago, where someone started a car using a small lithium battery and a capacitor. The capacitor, which can’t hold a charge for long, was paired with the lithium battery, providing both an instant power surge and sustained energy output. Both components were small enough to fit in the palm of a hand.

Suddenly, it all made sense. If this concept worked on a small scale, why not in a full-sized battery? Compact lithium jump starters are already available for emergency use, so why not replace the starter battery itself with a larger, longer-lasting lithium solution.

It became clear that lithium technology could deliver both the high cranking power of a thin-plated lead-acid battery and the deep discharge capability of a thick-plated deep-cycle battery. After all, lithium batteries don’t rely on thin or thick lead plates, they’re an entirely different technology. To me, they are more like a computer-controlled power unit, capable of delivering energy in ways never before possible. So, why shouldn’t they be dual-purpose? In fact, it seems likely that lithium batteries could eventually replace all traditional battery types, at least until an even more advanced technology comes along.

What Makes the Canbat CLI125-12LT Special?

The CLI125-12LT is a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, a modern alternative to traditional lead-acid batteries. It offers a 125Ah capacity and delivers 1100 cranking amps, making it a perfect fit for high-power applications. Unlike traditional lead-acid batteries that rely on thin plates to deliver high cranking amps, the CLI125-12LT uses electric vehicle (EV) grade lithium cells, similar to those found in Tesla electric cars. These cells allow for extreme power output and high discharge rates, making them superior for starting applications and deep-cycle use.

Designed for Marine Applications

If you’re running an outboard motor between 150 and 250 horsepower, this battery is a game-changer. It’s fully compatible with popular marine brands like Mercury and Minn Kota and meets or exceeds the cranking and charging requirements for Mercury 4-stroke engines up to 250hp. Compared to traditional sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries, this lithium alternative is 70% lighter while lasting up to 3000 charge cycles. That means more power, less weight, and no more struggling with heavy batteries on your boat.

CCA vs Discharge

The term Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) is commonly used to describe the performance of lead-acid batteries. While lithium batteries are not classified as CCA-rated, the term is sometimes used to simplify their capabilities for comparison. Technically, lithium batteries have a high discharge rate, which can be referenced in CCA to provide a relatable measure of their performance.

Lithium-ion batteries are defined by their discharge rates, typically expressed as a C-rate, which indicates how quickly a battery can be discharged relative to its capacity. A 1C discharge rate means the battery will be fully discharged in one hour, while a 0.5C rate corresponds to a two-hour discharge, and a 2C rate to a 30-minute discharge.

The EPOCH Dual Purpose Battery

EPOCH DUAL PURPOSE LITHIUM

The EPOCH LiFePO4 Cranking Starter Battery is designed for high-performance applications, offering approximately 1100 CCA and compatibility with all outboard motors up to 250HP.

It delivers a cranking power of 800A for 10 seconds when the state of charge (SOC) is above 60%, 800A for 5 seconds when SOC is below 60%, and 600A for 10 seconds. With a peak charge acceptance of 165A for up to one minute and a maximum continuous discharge of 150A as a deep-cycle battery, it provides reliable power.

Featuring an internal heating system, it enables charging in sub-zero conditions, while Bluetooth connectivity allows for monitoring via iOS and Android apps, including over-the-air firmware updates. It supports Victron communications via CANBus, integrating seamlessly with the Victron Cerbo GX. With a lifespan exceeding 6,000 cycles, it is maintenance-free and backed by an 11-year manufacturer warranty.

More Than Just a Boat Battery

Although a perfect fit for marine applications, dual purpose lithium batteries are great for:

  • RVs and campers – Store and use power efficiently while on the road.
  • Solar energy storage – Ideal for off-grid setups and backup power.
  • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems – Keeps important devices running during outages.
  • Medical equipment – Reliable power when it’s needed most.

Storage & Expansion

One of the best things about these batteries are its flexibility. If you need more power, you can connect multiple batteries in parallel for more capacity (e.g., 12V 250Ah, 375Ah, or 500Ah) or in series for higher voltage (24V, 36V, or 48V systems). Even if you don’t use it regularly, it can be stored for up to 2 years without losing performance, just charge it once every 6 months to keep it in top shape.

Conclusion

As I researched these batteries, I discovered that many brands now offer dual-purpose lithium options. Over time, we’ll see which ones stand out, but for now, I’ve added two trusted brands that we have experience with and can confidently recommend.

These batteries offer true versatility, they can start your car, truck, or boat while also powering your RV’s house loads or any mobile setup. They can run a boat’s inverter or even start the engine if the main starter battery fails. Traditionally, deep-cycle batteries were for sustained power, while starter batteries were strictly for ignition, but this technology is changing that distinction.

It’s easy to envision a future where a single smart battery, managed by switches or an onboard computer, seamlessly handles all power needs. Imagine a motorhome where one lithium battery powers the fridge, starts the engine with a tap on the dashboard screen, and lasts for years without needing replacement.
