GOVERNMENT: How the NTSB is Using Drones to Capture the Aftermath of the Key Bridge Collapse in Baltimore
The devastating collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, merely 8 miles from where I grew up, is something no one can avoid hearing about this week. It's a tragedy that has caused a terrible loss of life and will likely disrupt the economy in ways that haven't been calculated yet.
The bridge was brought down when it was hit by a Singaporean cargo ship named the 'Dali'. In the wake of this disaster, drones have emerged as crucial tools for assessing the extensive damage. The National Transportation Safety Board Safety Board released video capturing close-ups of the mangled metal. While drones are great for pictures and video, they can also be used for 2D and 3D mapping for accurate measurements and calculations. They can detect potential hazardous leaks through thermal imaging.
Shortly after the incident, the FAA established a no-fly zone to ensure unobstructed rescue and recovery efforts, a necessary measure in the critical hours following the collapse. This tragedy not only underscores the significance of drone technology in emergency responses but also brings a somber reminder of the fragility of structures we often take for granted. Read More
