Do we still need Backpropagation to train neural networks?
A new line of research is challenging the foundations of modern deep learning by proposing neural network training without the traditional forward pass or backpropagation.
The algorithm, called NoProp, introduces an alternative approach based on local learning rules inspired by neuroscience. Instead of relying on global gradients and error backpropagation, it uses mechanisms like Hebbian learning and energy-based updates.
What changes with this approach?
It’s worth noting that, as of now, these methods are still in the research phase. They don't yet outperform the stability and effectiveness of backpropagation in real-world applications like language models, computer vision, or speech recognition.
Still, the idea of training deep networks without the classical pipeline represents a conceptual shift worth watching closely.
Is it here to stay? Only time will tell.
