Do official Company purpose statements always make sense?

Each company is trying to share their key purpose of existence, raison d´etre in a most simple way. They call it Credo, Company purpose, Company values etc. In my career I have seen many examples of great and meaningful statements but also a lot of very poor ones. Few examples of those I really appreciate: "Driven by a passion to help patient" (Edwards Lifesciences) - it is absolutely clear, what the company aims for, and you can appreciate it. Or: "Nourishing families so they can flourish and thrive" (Kellogg) - you exactly what is the company focused on. Or: "To organize the worlds information and make it universally accessible and useful." (Google) - even if I did not put the company name, everybody could guess it. I have chosen few examples (in this case I will not mention companies´ names), which I do not consider as the best ones. "We deliver additional value to our customers" - you have no clue what the company is doing or what is that value they are talking about. "Our purpose is to inspire the dream of a better life through authenticity and timeless style." - Can you at least guess the industry? And the last one: "Tomorrow starts with confidence. What will tomorrow bring? How will you face it? And most importantly, what can you do today to make sure you’re positioned for success? Wherever you grow, we’ll be there." Very long but in fact does not say really much to me.

So, what are the principles for a good Company purpose statement? You can find plenty of interesting and useful guides how to write a good Company purpose statement on the internet, however from my personal perspective, a good statement should be:

  • clear on the purpose of your existence - why is the company here? what is it really doing?
  • reasonably long
  • avoiding insignificant terms, like "value", "better life", "world class"
