Design driven factories
We often talk about the dream offices yet we don’t hear much about the dream factories. It is common to highlight the part where the management or design happens leaving production facilities in the background thus I decided to research design driven companies backed up by the design driven factories.
Bang&Olufsen HQ and factory in Struer, Denmark
Bang & Olufsen celebrates its 95th anniversary this year, but it hasn't been always easy for this iconic electronics producer. At the end of the WWII B&O factory was burned down as they refused to collaborate with Nazi supporters. Luckily, it was quickly rebuilt and now B&O is known to be a leader in consumer electronics and their design is unmistakable. B&O HQ and factory building in Struer is called Factory 5, however it is better know as "The Farm" and you can often spot sheep grazing outside the building.
Printing house KOPA in Kaunas, Lithuania
Printing house KOPA is appreciated by the designers, architects and photographers for quite an obvious reason. Every single detail in the building is design driven from interior with paper-suggestive lamps in the lobby to the landscape design. A distinctive element of this printing house is a garden in the middle of the building which is equally seen from office as well as from production facility. The sense of equality is reflected throughout the whole factory. Same materials, interior elements and furniture were used drawing no line between seen by public vs backstage, everything and everyone is of an equal importance.

Furniture producer Vestre in Magnor, Norway
Vestre aims to build the most environmentally friendly furniture plant in the world. The project is called The Plus and is expected to be completed in 2021/2022. The plan is really ambitious and includes strong promises regarding energy efficiency and meeting the Paris Agreement's goals. Solar panels are expected to generate 250,000 kWh of energy per year and the surplus heat from production is planned to be reused to warm the building, all this would enable to decrease the energy consumption by 90% compared to the conventional factory. Also, The Plus aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50%. The architecture of the building looks impressive and perfectly blends in with nature.
Vitra factory in Weil am Rhreim, Germany
Vitra factory building has this oval shape which not only looks impressive, but due to this circular shape also facilitates the movement of the trucks. The most impressive detail of the building is curtain façade. Its elements were made from acrylic glass and then vacuum moulded into this textile suggestive shape. There were no such size oven thus a special heating oven had to be built to mould these acrylic panels measuring 1.8 metres in width by 11 metres in height!
