In Defense of Amazon.com

In Defense of Amazon.com

It is common sense the President of the United States should NOT single out companies he personally dislikes and attack them publicly. And in the case of Amazon, not only are his actions wrong, but the company he hates has changed my life for the better.

As a guy with size 15 shoes, before Amazon.com and Zappos and companies like them, I was never able to find shoes I could wear. As a 6'4" guy with long arms, Large Tall shirts were a pipe dream. And pants with a 36 inseam? Ya, no. The internet enabled the "long tail" of customer demand to be served, and all our lives were better for it. Did internet retailers disrupt the hell out of Sears, JC Penney, and so on and so forth. Heck yes. It's a brick-and-mortar graveyard out there. Brick and mortar retailers have learned differentiating on service is what works. And many have.

Disruption causes lost jobs and heartache. Which is why a smarter President would direct the nation's focus and energy into training and education programs for displaced retail workers.

Amazon is also more than a retailer. Take AWS, their "cloud" business. It has also changed my life. I've now founded two VC-backed startups that have relied on their cloud infrastructure to deliver really good business applications at a fraction of the cost of the competition. Without their risk-taking and innovation, entrepreneurs like me would have either grown our businesses much slower or not at all, and prices for business applications that rely on the cloud would be 5-10x higher.

Unlike many, I actually support some of Trump's policies, for example his desire for reciprocity on tariffs. But in pursuing Amazon, he pursues the heart of innovation in America. The notion that we can always make things better & that it's ok to risk the status quo to discover new, better ways of working and living. I applaud and thank Amazon for all the ways it's improved my personal and professional life. If you do too, let the President and his administration hear from you.
