We're rushing to deploy them, eager to reap the benefits of automation and scale. But a recent incident involving Cursor , a company building AI-powered coding tools, serves as warning: AI chatbots can go spectacularly off-script, and the consequences can be immediate and painful – even for companies who supposedly know AI best.

What Happened at Cursor? (The Bot That Lied)
A developer using Cursor noticed a bug preventing multi-device use. They contacted support. An agent named "Sam" confidently replied that this was intended behavior due to a new (non-existent) single-device policy. Users, understandably frustrated by this supposed policy change that broke common developer workflows, started threatening to cancel subscriptions en masse. Hours later, Cursor leadership jumped in: Oops, "Sam" was an AI bot, the policy was fake, and the actual issue was an unrelated backend bug. Cue apologies, refunds, and frantic backtracking.
Hallucinations Aren't Cute, They're Costly
This wasn't just a simple bug; it was a classic case of AI confabulation, often called "hallucination." LLMs are designed to generate plausible-sounding text. When they don't know an answer, instead of admitting ignorance, they often just make something up that sounds confident and correct.
