Critical support measures for families and pediatric VWD patients
Navigating life with Von Willebrand Disease (VWD) can be challenging, especially for children and their families. From managing daily activities to understanding the condition, comprehensive support is crucial. Effective support measures can significantly improve the quality of life for pediatric VWD patients and their families, ensuring they receive the care, education, and resources necessary to manage this condition successfully.
Access to Care and Referral to the Right Experts
On primary care initial pathways, there is a lack of access for many patients," says Erica Crilly, a nurse practitioner. Erica continues, "Although there's some recognition once they enter the care pathway and then have a referral, the initial access has been difficult for patients, and it's a big problem.
Educational Resources for Patients and Families
"With the current educational resources, patients and their families are not engaging effectively. I hope to see a collaborative approach in building educational materials to raise awareness and help patients and families understand and articulate their condition. This would enable healthcare professionals to listen better and allow patients to advocate for themselves when necessary." shared Erica Crilly.
Message to young women under your care with heavy menstrual bleeds?
"We can help you manage your condition, making it something that isn't in the background but rather in the forefront of your life." explains Erica Crilly.
In March 2024, in partnership with leading Canadian VWD thought leaders, we held the Von Willebrand Disease (VWD) State of Care Symposium. All the interviews you see here are part of this special gathering. This symposium aimed to understand and map the care gaps for individuals living with VWD and determine the necessary actions to provide them with equal opportunities for full engagement in all aspects of life.
