Creative Trends in Visual Content
There is no question that we are moving away from a world of written content to one where the visual plays an increasingly significant part. The invention of the smartphone screen, and the speed at which we now absorb information mean that long form written content is increasingly being snubbed in favour of video and infographics.
Visual content has been proven to increase click through rates on blog posts, social sharing and websites. Research from Twitter shows a 28% increase in retweets on posts that have video, along with a 35% increase in retweets on posts with images. There are even entire social media platforms now dedicated to the visual, the most popular being instagram and pinterest, and YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world.
Visual content is an extremely effective way to build up a visual representation of your brand, but the danger is that if your visuals look out-dated or amateur, it can be damaging for your business. We’ve all seen daggy websites that are clearly old and this can be a deterrent to potential customers. To make sure your visuals really create the right impression, it’s important to be aware of emerging trends.
Shuttershock recently released its 2015 creative trends report, based on data from searches of the site, which reveals the concepts, styles and themes of video and photography that it predicts will be big over this year.
Video trends
With projected spend in the global online video advertising industry expected to reach US$9.8 billion worldwide, there’s no doubt that video marketing is more than just a fad. Fortunately, creating professional looking videos is relatively easy without too much expensive equipment and they can be uploaded to YouTube for instant search ability.
If you want to create a really stunning, up to date piece of video content, some effects and trends that are expected to be big this year include time lapse, animation, slow motion, aerial and fashion themes.
Photography trends
Images are used everywhere, from your website to your blog posts, marketing materials and social media. To prevent your images looking out-dated in 2015, think about incorporating some of the images that are predicted to be big this year, like:
• Nature
• Collections of objects
• Soft light
• Floral images
• Macro images
• Reflections
• Watercolours
As with all types of marketing, an awareness of your audience is essential. Different visual techniques will appeal to different groups of people and what is appropriate for a spa may not be appropriate for a financial services business.
The trick is to find your own unique, individual brand image and voice, which looks up to date and modern, without being overly trendy or gimmicky. It may sound complicated but it is worth putting some time and effort into your visuals, and creating a strong visual brand as it will set you up well for the future.
