Chemical Manufacturers Support Fixing Missteps and Making America a Manufacturing Superpower

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) has expressed strong support for EPA Administrator Zeldin’s initiatives aimed at revitalizing U.S. manufacturing. The ACC emphasizes that a more predictable regulatory process is essential for enhancing domestic production, reducing operational costs, and strengthening national security. By addressing previous regulatory missteps, these efforts aim to bolster job creation, innovation, and the global competitiveness of the U.S. chemical industry.

ACC Applauds EPA Actions on Chemical Sector NESHAPs

The ACC has commended the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to reconsider the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPs) related to chemical manufacturing and commercial sterilizers. The previous regulations were criticized for overlooking scientific evidence and imposing unfeasible requirements that could hinder the production of essential chemicals vital to public health and national security. The ACC welcomes this reevaluation as a step toward developing science-based policies that protect public health without imposing unnecessary regulatory burdens.

US to Export More Chemical Feedstocks Amid Drought of US Cracker Projects

The United States is projected to increase exports of ethane, propane, and other natural gas liquids (NGLs) due to a surge in production coupled with flat domestic demand. This trend is contributing to a rise in new terminal projects aimed at exporting these feedstocks to growing markets overseas. The lack of new U.S. cracker projects, which are facilities that process these feedstocks into ethylene and other chemicals, has led to an oversupply, making exports a viable solution to balance the market.

Graphitic Energy Commissions Pilot Plant to Produce Low-Cost Clean Hydrogen and Graphite

Graphitic Energy (formerly C-Zero) has launched a pilot plant at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. This facility demonstrates the company’s novel methane pyrolysis technology, which converts natural gas into clean hydrogen and solid carbon in the form of graphite. The process aims to provide a cost-effective and scalable solution for hydrogen production while sequestering carbon in a stable, solid form.

A Strong US Economy Should Spur Chemicals

Following two challenging years, US chemical output is forecasted to increase in 2025. Despite a global downturn in petrochemicals, US producers are expected to perform well due to low production costs. However, potential trade tariffs pose a risk to this positive outlook.
