Connecting the Disconnected

In my last post I spoke about the perils of being too connected. Here’s another perspective - at least from an intranet level.

One of the main objections of organizations opposed to remote working teams is that the members miss out on vital information sharing, collaboration and company culture.

But what if there was a way to overcome all those issues?

What we’ve found is that the vast majority of the new generation work force are not only comfortable working remotely, but are actually more comfortable being connected digitally rather than physically.

Why is this?

Most people under the age of 30 are digital natives who’ve grown up digitally connected. They’re more comfortable and more adept at communicating through a device than face-to-face. While this obviously has societal ramifications, it does hold multiple opportunities from a business perspective.

A full spectrum collaboration and project management platform such as Nimbulis actually allows digital natives to perform to full potential. Here’s how:

  • Allows instant communication in a manner immediately understood by digital natives
  • Provides instant transparency - perhaps more transparency than when team members are gathered in the same office. Every task, every objective, every decision is recorded and instantly available to all team members.
  • Allows flexibility - work can be done across time zones and allows workers a certain amount of schedule autonomy when they are monitored based on deadlines and results rather than on the number of hours spent in an office.
  • Allows more accurate performance assessment: We’ve all been in teams where the most articulate and extrovert get the credit for team successes while the quiet introverts are often overlooked. When work is conducted via a transparent collaborative platform, each individual’s performance and results are easier to see.

What about the advantages for an employer?

Here are some of the ways in which a full spectrum collaboration platform makes sense for organizational control:

  • Allows transparent and immediate project management and status overview.
  • Allows instant communication with team leaders and members
  • Provides the ability to access expertise instantly and globally
  • Provides accurate, auditable records allowing easy review of processes in order to quickly improve workflows and outcomes
  • Requires less corporate office and equipment overheads
  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased ability to quickly respond to market demands

The way we work is definitely changing. The rapid advance of the digital age is creating work environments which differ significantly from what was in existence a few decades ago. In my opinion, this kind of intranet connectivity can enhance quality of life for people who would formerly be chained to a 9 to 5 desk job.

What do you think? I’d really like to hear about your viewpoint and / or experience on the matter. Feel free to post your comments!
